Any of the above... whatever works best for you. I suggest any filmmaker to go to a 4 year college after highschool so they can have something to fall back on just incase they aren't able to pay the bills with their film career.
i agree with the above but would also like to note
1) scriptwriters themselves are somewhat removed from the production process. Anyone only writing scripts will most likely have to fund thier own movies and stuff while they make the switchover.
2) It takes alot of promotions from the lowliest on set to reach director. Consdier film school to get a jump on the ladder.
of course, i'm just a freshman, so what do i know about it right? I mean, i haven't bee out there.
(but i've read interviews)

I would suggest just making an amazing film (or more) in a college (Preferably film school) and get it into as many festivals as you can. This way you try and make a name for yourself. Try going for the big fests (telluride, Sundance, and any fest that has a major city and "international" in the name. And hopefully (if God loves you) someone in the industry will see your film, like it, and the rest will be history.
Now keep in mind that that it takes alot of persistance, sweat, and tears to do that, but if filmmaking is your true passion, then you won't let anything stop you.

1st u need a BIG bowl of Gummy worms....then you sit on the couch all your life gaining 5 pounds a day and wait for a filmmaker person to walk in and hand you a contract your a movie.
There's alot of talk that for filmmakers to get into big productions in Hollywood that it would probably only happen if you have family or relatives in that position..is this technically true?
