James Berardinelli keeps up a non-profit movie review website and supports himself during the day as an electrical engineer. He gets into special pre-screenings and the works. I don't know how he got his start, but I think he always worked in the etheric plane.
Most paid film critics start writing for newspapers or other small publications and work their way up.
Either way, you must be a decent writer, and you have to act like you know something about film.
