Who applied where? Who's heard from somewhere? What're your plans?
Me? I applied to practically everywhere. USC, UCLA, Chapman, LMU, FSU, UT and Boston. I'm hoping to get into all of them, obviously, and would love to go to USC. But I'm also pretty excited about Chapman.
Yeah, I've heard from no one, beyond a couple confirmation letters that said my application is complete and will be heading to review shortly.
I'm sort of nervous about the whole thing. I don't have a ton of experience since getting out of school. I've been working part-time as an assistant editor at a local production company and I do some part-time scriptwriting Vet School project.
I have NO idea what my chances are at any school, but I'm pretty ready to find out. I also applied to American, which is where I think I probably have the best shot.
i applied to AFI for the editing program. i've exchanged emails with admissions, but haven't scheduled an interview yet.
i did not apply anywhere else; i'm only interested in attending AFI, and i'm only interested in staying in California. i want to edit motion pictures. that's it. i've got enough solid experience from working in large-market television to know that i ONLY want to concentrate on 1 area of filmmaking.
my plans:
i want no distractions from working on projects and i want to be close to the conservatory so i don't have to even THINK about traffic. when i finish the program i want to "hit the ground running" and begin working immediately (and paying back loans), which i think is totally reasonable.
i've lived in the LA area before and i love southern california. however, when i lived there, i always had a brutal commute. the traffic and the air quality can suck the life out of you. if/when the time comes to move, i am going to get a cheap-ass (relative to SF) studio (don't care how small - crash pad is fine) in los feliz or hollywood and bike to AFI. i've also got a buddy in san pedro who has a futon for me if necessary, which would be punk as ****.
part of me wants to bail to LA now and slum-it-up for 6 months, but that would be idiotic.
i will probably stay in the bay area until sometime in july or early august. i guess it all depends on when the program starts, how much money i have saved and what my buddies in the south bay and OC are up to. if my friends are all busy, then i'd be sitting around watching tv all day, so i might as well stay up here and work. i guess i could surf...
whatever, this is largely irrelevant because i haven't been accepted yet and there is still a chance that my girlfriend could be persuaded into moving... if the latter happened, it would up the ante a bit.

I've applied to AFI (Directing) and NYU (Film Production) for Fall '08. I've been out of school for about a year and am currently a creative director at a major studio here in Hollywood (making movie trailers for big budget films).
I moved from NYC to Los Angeles in the summer and only see myself attending either AFI or NYU (because of their conservatory atmosphere). I have directed two films (Super 16mm, $7k+ budgets), and have acted professionally in film, Broadway / off-Broadway.
I'm excited to hear back from NYU and AFI for possible interviews. I went on the AFI tour and from what I saw, it's awesome! Great facilities (especially for editing!). I can see myself going to school there.

I applied for the Fall '08 USC MFA Production program. I have not heard anything. When I check my status online it just says that the application is complete. I called and found out that they are not done uploading all of the information to their system. I was told that by the middle of this month, everything should be uploaded.
I hope to get in!

Wow...they're still uploading applications almost three months after the deadline. When you consider that many people applied well before the deadline (I applied two months before) it makes you realize how much competition there is out there...
Did they happen to mention when they'll be sending out notifications or invitations to interview?

Hey guys. I applied at UCLA, Chapman and Miami. All Producer programs. Obviously I hope to get into all three but UCLA is my top. Although I've heard good things about Chapman. I haven't heard anything but I got a postcard from UCLA telling me they got my stuff. What a tease
I take you all have similar experiences?

i just read the Film School Confidential chapter on Chapman. Check it out if you haven't already. Sounds like a great program with high-end gear.
the one caviat (sp?) is that it's a newer program, so it lacks the long list of graduates to back it up... but it probably more than makes up for that.

They say Chapman has the equipment, they just need the alumni.
I live around Chapman, and although the program might be okay, the surrounding suburbs of Orange County are quite bland and commuting to Los Angeles can be horrid during rush hour.
I applied to NYU, Columbia, UCLA, USC and UTexas for Fall 2008 MFA Film Production. I really feel like I need to get out of the Southern California area so my number one choices are NYU and Columbia. I am keeping my fingers crossed!

I applied to UCLA screenwriting, Columbia production, NYU production and also dramatic writing. The wait to find out if I'll get any interviews is killing me!

AH- I agree with you 100% about OC. I used to work in Costa Mesa. It was a brutal commute from Long Beach. Later, I used to drive from LBC to Burbank everyday. That's pretty much why I moved to SF.
If I attend AFI, I'm going to get a place in Los Feliz or Hollywood.

I live in North Hollywood (NoHo Arts District) right now and it's about a 10-15min commute to AFI. It's a nice trendy community of artists, filmmakers, etc... Sort of a rip off of SoHo but it's nice! You guys should check it out.

one of my friends in LA lives there (in the NoHo arts district). pretty cool, but the rest of NoHo doesn't satisfy. I miss Long Beach. Alex's Bar is the best.
I am thinking of bicycle commuting to AFI (if I get in). I'm one of those single speed/fixed gear idiots. i am really getting ahead of myself.
