Right now I' living in new york, trying to figure out what to do for the next several years. I got a BS in physics 13 months ago, but have been pondering film school for a MFA. Even though I never studied it in college, I have always been interested film. Can anyone with experience tell me if film school, like columbia or NYU or anywhere respectable is worth the cost, and if someone like me who does not have a BA background would have a shot at admission?

Yes and yes! Browse the old threads about this stuff, give NYU a call, and see what you think.

I don't think being interested in film is just enough to get you a seat in a MFA program, but that doesn't mean you can't get in or don't have a shot. Many of the schools don't require a background in theater or film or anything arts related for you to apply to their program. But you do need to have done something creative because they ask for a creative portfolio list and samples of your work. I think the best thing to do is take a few film courses to get some hands on experience, make some films, and in the meanwhile look into schools that you might apply to. Also pick up some filmmaking books and screenwriting books from Barnes and noble and start practicing.

I also got a BS degree and had no background in filmmaking before deciding to pursue it as a career. So that's what got me started towards applying to schools. Good luck. Maybe others here can offer some more advice.
