Which schools are you talking about? I say: even if you decide to go to the 2nd choice school, ultimately set your sights on your dream school. Possibly the best way into your dream school is by transfering from your 2nd choice school -- and a year there might give you the means to beef up your portfolio considerably.
I guess I should add, though, that I don't know what I'm talking about.
OK, one more edit to this reply, to actually answer your question: I think it is important to feel good about what you're doing and how you're spending your money. But the specifics of your situation do make a difference. I'm going into Tisch's Singapore program this fall, though my application was initially for their New York program and Singapore wasn't on my radar at all.
