MA screenwriting program at Cal State Northridge (15-20 min by freeway from UCLA) still taking applicants for fall '08. If you're a CA resident and have financial need, you could have your fees (about $2000 a semester) paid with a State Univ grant. It's like film school for free!
At CSUN, you have an opportunity to network and build your resume of scripts. Then, you can apply to other schools if you really need an MFA. BTW, the screenwriting program here is on track to become MFA as well.
Cal State LA (just east of downtown) is offering MFA degrees in Acting, Production, and Dramatic Writing starting Fall '08.
Currently, the only grad program in film at Northridge is the MA in Screenwriting (MFA is coming, but still years away, and no grad production).
Never taken any classes at Cal State LA, so can't vouch for the ability of the instructors. But the fees are low and most campuses have late application deadlines. I believe both Cal State LA and Northridge are still taking applications for Fall 2008.
