To follow up that last post by sa, I also called Scott Hardman from AFI and was waitlisted for producing. Im sooooo happy I finally know something. i was going to have an anxiety attack if it took them any longer.

I wish I could be in NYC for those fests to meet up, but I won't be up there until this fall.
LisheeBee,
UT-Austin is an awesome school and program. And, you were accepted to Columbia in nonfiction writing? Seems more like an issue of what to study than where to study....both of those are great options, I wouldn't second guess yourself if you want to do film.

I was in the running at AFI for both directing and editing (second year in a row for both programs) and didn't plan on going anywhere else, so Monday was just awful for me. It does hurt more the second time around, or in my case, the fourth...
Anyway, pity party over... I figured I'd have to wait for my rejection letters to arrive to know if I'm wait-listed, but they will tell you if you call them? Is that a common practice?

Thanks for the support in my decision. There doesn't seem to be many forums about the Austin program and I wasn't able to visit first so I had to wing it and make a decision without reading much opinion on it. But, what I have heard has been positive. So, I'm sure it'll be a great 2 yrs. Just wish I had some built in Austiners to drink with from this forum... I feel like my school is situated on the boundary line between the East COast-West Coast clans forming. (I guess that means I get to decide on tie-breakers if any debates break out)

manofaction & heywetried I had not heard anything from AFI until I called them. They are really accomidating on the phone and will tell you where you stand and such. Scott is a really nice guy. dont be worried about phoning them. they are supposed to tell the applicants if they are in or not, i dont think they make it like a game on purpose.
anyone know about the alternate lists? scott said that they took some from them every year, and it seems like lots of people are not going to AFI, however, it is not for my program so i will just have to tonya harding some afi producing applicants. jk.

I really am quite proud of us all. I think those of us landing (Or staying) in the OC/LA area should plan to go out and grab a drink together to celebrate as we all get settled.
Ideally though, one of us will have to find a place out towards these schools first were we can all crash afterwards. Cause seriously I think we all have a lot of drinking to do to balance out the stress of this application process.
Informal poll: How many of you applied for the first time this year, and how many was this the second time around?
When I was crying (yes, I admit it!) about getting wait-listed for USC two weeks ago, my cousin told me that I should feel proud to have gotten that far and to have interviewed at my other two choices.
She said getting into grad school is typically a several year process for most people, getting rejected two or three times before getting in...which I can't even comprehend.
I had no idea. I'm so clueless.
In related news, I just went and got my mail. AFI flat out rejected my ass.
It didn't even phase me...I figured I'd been waitlisted, not rejected, but I already committed to UCLA anyway.
And of course, the fact that my new Bolex H16 arrived on the same day might have had something to do with it.
Bolex=love.

AFI letter came: REJECTED for Producing. Thanks Neil Canton and Betsy Pollock. It was nice seeing you in that old building on the hill... for the last time... Good luck to all of you who got in. Peace!

Do you think it would be too pushy if I emailed UCLA tomorrow to ask when the committee will make their final decision? I need to mail in my response form for Boston U and don't want to make any real decisions without UCLA in the picture. Or would that be a bad move?

Last night I got my rejection email from UCLA and then today I got my acceptance letter in the mail from AFI. Why they didn't bother to call me, I have no idea.
None of this really applies at this point since I sent in my USC acceptance yesterday.
This was my first time applying.

Jayimess you read my mind. I was just thinking that talent and personality can only get you so far in this grad school game. Seems like each school knows exactly the type of people they want before we even bother to apply.
That being said its so hard to judge yourself against standards no one truly understands.
Not only did I get rejected from UCLA, but I didn't even make it to the interview stage for whatever reason.
I agree with you Winter. I think the whole decision making process, who gets in, who doesn't, becomes pretty arbitrary at some point. Maybe they're just flipping coins.
Either way it seemed to work out in the end, so I can't complain.

And yes its amazing how each school has its own criteria. Like I said before, I think each school has a special idea for their student pool. So if you did not get into one but got into another, it does not mean that you were not good enough for one, or one must be more selective, not at all! Each school looks for specific characteristics in each candidate that they hope meets their holistic mold. Each school is subjective, as each candidate is subjective. If I, for example chose Columbia over Chapman, it does not mean Chapman is not a good school; it just means Columbia was the better fit for me. And if AFI chose JL but not Jayimess, it doesn't mean Jayimess was not good enough. So great job everyone. It would be nice if we could hold a conference once a year, maybe in Chicago (since its in the middle) and have everyone in these wonderful programs attend. It would be great networking and we would finally meet each other! Maybe Studentforums.com can host it!?
