He's a pretty cool cat, I never had a class with him, because he only came on my final semester...but he talked me into applying to AFI.
The film program really is what you make of it...my screenwriting prof did her MFA at Columbia...we've got access to more stuff than people realize, lots of Bolex cameras and 3-chips (Panasonic and Canon), a CP-16, and a huge Avid bay...and we own everything we make. My lab fees were like 80 bucks, which covered 4 rolls of film, I had to pay for processing, but they Telecined it for me.
They promote us pretty well, too, and are pretty supportive. I'm an alumna and they still let me use equipment when I need it.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the program in the future.
Oh, and for anybody who was wondering, I went back and re-read my email from S. Hardman.
Doesn't make me feel any better, but here it is...
"Also, all notification for acceptance for each discipline will be on April 16, 2007. Please keep the Admissions Committee informed of any changes to your contact information should they need to reach you in advance of this date for any reason."

Is it on April 16 (phone call, eMail), or in a letter postmarked Apr 16 (which will arrive here in Cleveland on Apr 18-19...)? It's just to much people... Knowing AFI, and how they contacted me fo my interview, and some other stuff (like the application deadline that was not updated on their site until the last day...) sometimes I wonder where the money goes, since they are clearly the most expensive ones...

True that. I applied for Producing and I have never been so on edge before. Even though I shouldn't be. That certain director who did Jaws got rejected from USC a couple of times and never went. I suppose its really what you make of your own situations.

I posted my email last week, then an AFI alum said that in 2004 they called people on the notification date...so between the two, everyone assumed today was the day, myself included.
LATex got a call today.
Lilly got a call Saturday, and an email today.
Crackery got a call on Friday.
They're all screenwriters, like me.
Seems like nobody else, from screenwriting or the other disciplines have heard yet, either yay or nay.

On the other hand, Bob Mandel told me in my interview that since they sometimes flake out on notifying people, if it came time to make a decision and I still hadn't heard from them, to "Please, please, please" give them a call before I made a choice.
He really said "please" three times, haha.
I just don't know.
Another part of me thinks, the email says "notification for acceptance" will occur today. Perhaps as in, only those accepted get notified today.
And they were flaky with my interview too...called me four days before, booked me, then called me two hours later to tell me they accidentally overbooked Tuesday, so it would have to be Wednesday instead.
I can't keep thinking about it.

I guess we need an attorney to explain the true meaning of AFI's guidelines. I wondered about them from the beggining. But, I don't know... I'm just opening my second beer, and who cares. Life goes on.

Yeah,on my interview, Jim Mcbride specifically looked me in the eye and said, " accepted directors will get a call on MONDAY, April 16th, and rejections will be postmarked April 16th for the others). So Im guessing we are out.
But it doesnt matter to me too much, I actually did a lot of research in the past week and realized I would attend Columbia even if I were accepted into AFI. For many reasons; 1. E vs. W 2. Columbia is less industry based, more structured around narrative, giving me the chance to work on my master plan film, which I know I wont be able to do at AFI because of the way the program is structured.
And I'm not just making this decision by default due to my very probable rejection from AFI. I really mean it! I am in love with Columbia!
Good luck to everyone
