I just started looking into grad schools--I'm a junior in undergrad right now. Naturally, as everybody does, I took a look at UCLA and I'm wondering if anyone who's gotten in could answer a few questions for me.
1.) I read over the requirements and found -nothing- about a portfolio--am I missing something? Is a portfolio only optional?
2.) Does the school that you're currently enrolled in affect their decision? For example, if you graduate from a school with very little money in the film budget so it kind of sucks a whole lot, are you pretty much screwed?
Thanks a lot.

Hi there. I'm a current grad student at UCLA. There is no portfolio requirement unless you are selected for an interview, in which case it is optional for you to bring one in. I don't think it plays that much of a role in their decision-making process.
They don't care about how much money your undergrad alma mater has for a film budget or any other budget. Where you went to undergrad doesn't play a big role in their decision. We have some ivy leaguers, and some people who graduated from small schools you've never heard of. I studied history, I think only about a quarter of my classmates studied film as an undergrad. I honestly think that coming from an undergrad film background can be more of a hindrance than a help--not to scare you, but they are looking for people with interesting life experiences and/or unique things to say. I would suggest that in your application you discuss something personal about yourself other than film that has you committed to wanting to become a visual storyteller.
