I Just saw "the Holiday" - I thought it was horrible - too fakey. I thought it was a BAD chick flick - all cliche and no heart.

Yeah, Tima, I was one of those painfully well-rounded types, with a paragraph of page numbers next to my name in the High School yearbook index.

I managed to graduate in the top third of my HS class while doing all of those activities, working fifty hours a week, and caring for my drug-addicted mother, before placement in foster care my senior year.

I did fewer activities beyond my scholarship athletics (track and cheerleading) my first go-round at college (I flunked out...er, dropped out from ages 21-25, and just graduated in December at 27). I reflect a lot of what I went through in my personal statements...a part of me thinks that I was only chosen for interviews because of them.

Bob Mandel at AFI basically said so...when asked if I had any questions for them, I asked them why they chose me, what made me stick out?

His response:

"Your script submission showed raw talent, and your personal narrative showed that you have a lot of life experiences to draw from, and the determination to get through anything."

I don't know, I don't assume that women tend to direct chick flicks. Isn't Sixteen Candles a chick flick? I think we should make a list of chick flicks directed by men.

And what is a chick flick anyway?

Alot of the ones I know are international, and NOT AT ALL CHICK FLICKS! They are amazing films:

Mira Nair - "Vanity Fair", "Monsoon Wedding", "Salam Bombay"

Deepa Mehta- "Earth", "Fire", "Water"

Tahmineh Milani- "Two Women" "The Hidden Half"

Has anyone mentioned Agnes Varda yet?

And Chantal Akerman. If anyone has a chance to see her film "Jeanne Dielman", I really recommend it. Particularly for New Wave fans.

And I still want someone to try to define the term "chick flick." Do people consider it a derogatory term or a judgment-neutral term?

Define a "chick flick"?

Well I don't necessarily see it as a dereogatory term, but it is pretty stereotypical...I guess it's any movie that would be assumed to catch female audiences, (mainly romantic comedies), but it doesn't have to mean that only females like it.

Does that help at all? It's a pretty hard term to give just one definition for...

I'm surprised no one mentioned Patty Jenkins. She directed Monster which was quite a success. Maybe I just overlooked her.
