So I normally go on with a long story about my past jobs in intros like this but I'll spare all your time because I know you are all busy working on some great movies haha

Long story short, between high school and college I went though a 4 year vocational school to learn 120 and 240V electrical wiring (electrician). Turns out its much harder to get into all that than I though so I'm now moving onto something new and since TV production has always been a fun hobby for me I thought it would be great to get into it for a full time job.

I'm currently at the local college learning all of this TV stuff from the ground up. Back in High school we had a new state of the art studio put in and so the last year I was there I got to take the class which I enjoyed. The college has good equipment but some of it is a little dated and all from what I'm used to using.

Anyways, I want to either get into editing or camera operator. Both seem like fun to me but I do lots more editing at home than I do camera work so I may want to just get into editing from the start. To top that off I'm going to bet certified with Avid editing software through the local college I'm going to.

At this point I have no idea where to even start looking to get a job at editing. I'm in CNJ and I've heard most of the production work is in NY so I can just hop on the train if I needed to get over there each day.

If anyone has any tips on getting a first job in the TV production field and any tips on what I can do in my spare time or at the college that would help me get a job please let me know.

One last thing, can you make a good living with this type of work????

Thanks for your time,
Dave S.

I figured I should add that I do a lot of audio recording work in my home studio, pics in my photobucket "moody07747".

I play a lot of instruments and am a one man band recording each line at a time and editing it all together using Sonar 6 producer.

My thought on adding this:
In the college TV studio I'm great at the sound setup even though the teachers don't know much about it themselves....
So I am always ahead of everyone on that part and can easily show everyone the little tips and tricks of working the equipment that I know how to use.

I guess that would also help me in the real job situation where if needed, I could fill in on sound.

Well, you will surly need something in your portfolio. Are you interested in this at all?

I'm looking for an up-and-coming director to create a music video for my new single, “Struggle (Symphonic).” You can shoot from an existing storyboard/concept or create your own. I will be available for participation.

It's a contest. There will be three winners - 1st place wins $500.00, 2nd $200.00 and 3rd $100.00 cash. Submissions must be received by June 1, 2008. You can get more information, download a copy of the existing storyboard and check out my new single, “Struggle (Symphonic),” by going to http://myspace.com/MichaelPaulMusicDotCom or http://MichaelPaulMusic.com

ok a little update.
I finished 3 videos:
- one music video over the weekend for fun
- an interview for a school project
- and a short movie for another school project.

My youtube account, (under sonicorbstudios) has my videos posted if anyone wants to see them...

Anyways next week the local high school is doing one of their scared straight programs. an all day alcohol and drunk driving awareness type program. The local TV companies will be filming from what I've heard and so I though I would get a cannon XL1 camera from the college and head on over to take some b-roll and do some interviews with a friend.

I would like to edit this at home on Adobe Premiere but it would be best if I worked with Avid to keep my mind on how it all works while on break for the summer.

I still have had no luck in finding a job. I don't even know where to start looking other than Craigslist...It just seems like this is a field where you need to know someone on the inside to get in.

anyways a nice interview type project of this scared straight program will be nice to work on and should impress my TV224 teacher when we get back to class after the break.
