I understand completely the idea of posting a link to a shot or a short film that no one would see otherwise - whether it is a film made by someone who isn't a student or anything else.

I personally think that the benefits to submitting to the site are huge, and hopefully that alone will discourage people abusing posting links to their films hosted on other sites.

Furthermore, it has occurred to me that if filmmakers on the site have their personal URLs posted with their profile, it seems silly to restrict members of the forum from posting a URL to their personal site as well.

My only concern is if the external linking is abused - that people are piggybacking the popularity of the site and the forums to have their films seen instead of submitting it to the site. i.e. linking to their film on a competing site.

I have instructed the mods to ease back on enforcing the rule for now.

I trust that external linking wont be abused and that the strength of the site's services alone are enough to merit the $10 hosting fee. (which still is ridiculously small)

Thanks Chris. That sounds very fair. I've been working on a doc for over a year now and I'm in the second cut and eventually want to post some clips on my site and get feedback, so now I feel better that some (if they want to) will be able to do just that.

Hopefully it will be relatively easy to distinguish between personal sites with clips and competing sites trying to horn in!
