Im still getting use to DV editing since converting from film and video.

I have a CANON ZR65 and I am using AVID Free (the free downloadable one off the website) and was wondering, after editing the video, how do i record it back to the camera's tape? I dont want to save it as a streaming video or cd, just back to the tape so I can then record it to a VHS.

Any help thanks!

If it is like Avid Xpress DV (which i assume it is) you simply hook your camera up to the fire wire, hit record on your camera and then play your timline. Make sure all you tracks are on and you should be fine. Good luck.

Didnt work.

I connected the cable to the camera. I then opened Avid and played the timeline. I switched teh camera to the CAMERA mode and pressed record but it is simply recording normally (recording in the present, things right in front of it)

is the camera on and on VCR mode before you start up Avid, cause in FCP it wont read the camera unless you have it plugged in and turned on before you open the application

Ok Im making progress thanks, but still not there.

I have the image on the screen in VCR mode. The same image is on the viewscreen of the camera. BUT when I press the record button on the camera itself, nothing happens. Also it says DV IN at the bottom of the view screen if that means anything.

This may seem stupid, but are you pressing record and play at the same time? I wish I could help you further, but I'm inexperienced with Avid. Good luck to ya.

ok - you're all set but you're pressing the wrong button. look for a record among the playback buttons on the side, or on the camera's remote control. not the big red record. Smile

Well it varies with some cameras. But I have a ZR45 and use the ZR series alot and basicaly with Imovie (Not sure about other Apps) you just hit export and make sure that camera is in VCR mode. DONT HIT RECORD or it will junk things up. The camera should begin rolling and I think youll see the footage on the LCD Screen.

actually you should have to hit record. Imovie automatically starts the camera rolling but most other NLE's don't, i'd put my money on Avid free not doing it either.

Edit: i took a look at your manual at canon.com, so check thse things:

first off go to your menu and check under vcr set up set av-dv out to off.

the manual refers to the remote for setting up to record. So, based on this:

Check that playback is visible on the DV cam's lcd. on the remote, press rec/pause. start it rolling and press pause on the remote to unpause the tape and start recording. Hope that helps.

Ok, one other thing. I am unfamilliar with Avid free but does it allow you to see effects real time before rendering? In otherwords on your timeline, at the top on the far right side is there a round button that glows green. If so it wont let you dump out until that is de-selected. Click it once (it should turn purple) and make sure everything is rendered (highlight all the tracks, and select an "in" symbol at the very start, and an "out" at the very end. Right click on the timline and select "render in and out" It will only render that which has not yet been rendered.) See if that works for ya.

It worked!! Thanks guys.

I played the video on AVID, it showed up on the LCD. I pressed Pause/Rec on the remote to change it from STOP to PAUSE. Then I pressed the PAUSE vcr button and it unpaused it and put it in record.

I have a sony digital 8 camera. Next to my record buttton there's a blank button with no marks on it. I have to press that and record at the same time in order for it to record. Does yours have a button like that?

No, our cameras are pretty different. I have a control on my remote that does it.
