I love Macs, I really truly do. But I don't hate PC's at all. Both of them obviously have pro's and con's that have already been listed numerous times...
My PC was:
AMD 2200+ 768 Mb's of RAM, with essentially only Explorer and Preimere running. 64Mb ATi Radeon 9000 XP Premiere Pro
Mac is:
1.5 Ghz's (17" Powerbook) 1 Gb of RAM 64 Mb (Powerbook model) Ati Radeon 9700 OSX Final Cut Express 2
Yes, essentially both editing systems are the same... but at least I noticed that in a relativly stable PC, Premiere ran fast for a while, then ate up my RAM like a ninja would. I'd have to shut the machine down and start anew. The Mac, I did some hardcore editing/rendering last night, and I can easily say that I was mundo impressed. There was NO slow down anywhere!
...But I felt that Premiere rendered faster.
I doubt this helps any... well, I still hope it does.

Dead thread or no.. I have only ever used FCP for about 5 minutes, so i cant say anything about it. I use Premiere, and have edited several large projects on it, and I have to say it works great for a while but then starts to screw up. It wont render certain chunks(ie gunfire that was added in) and it has a problem sometimes with audio (speeds it up). If youre on it for a while the preview starts to lag and the program has to be restarted. ALL In all when it works, premiere is great, does everything i ever wanted, when it doesnt work its so frustrating that i'm taken to the verge of destroying it with a blunt object.
other than that, Im pretty pro Pc, we use macs at school and i find i like being able to take apart and rebuild the pc whenever i need too, and everything costs about 1/2 as much. But id love to have a mac someday to edit on.
I understand that the upgrade issues seems really important to people.
But with a Mac, it seems that if you buy a new top of the line Mac today, you could easily use it for about... 5 years? Without really having to buy a new one. I plan on using my Powerbook for... well, till I get a new one, lol. Probably 3 years from now... but that's because I like to spend cash.

I always hear PC people saying that if you know how to configure it, it works great, and if you know how to work into and maintain Windows, its awesome, and that they want to be able to rebuild it and tweak it and do all this stuff to it. I never understood why that's a good thing. Computers should not need to be tweaked and rebuilt in order to work. They should work out of the box and work well...for a long time. That's why I use a Mac.
Although this is off topic on whether a PC or mac is better for student films, I have never really done alot of tweaking or anything to the machine. Its fairly easy to upgrade (I want a dvd burner i just go and buy one and shove it in the tower, and it works...most of the time). Same goes for software. I dont know that PC's are more or less stable than macs, b/c ive never used a mac extensively. My PC does tend to catch alot of trojans and virus' and what not though. I think the appeal of being able ot reassemble a PC is just knowing that you can. If i dump a pitcher of koolaid on the computer I know i can fix it, and it wont have to go into a repair shop.
I use P.C.! In fact, i'm using a P.C. to write this message this very moment...But I can easily say, hands down MAC 4 LIFE! I had a Mac a long time ago... Unfortunately that was before upgrades existed for computers, so I switched to P.C. (more affordable, more upgrades etc.) but even now I can easily say Mac 4 life! I have all the latest video software for my P.C. plugins, etc. But I'm constantly going over to my friends house to edit on his G4...why? MORE STABLE, MORE PRODUCTIVE! How can you be creative and make good movies if you can't be efficient and productive?
Listen, I use my P.C. and I use my friends G4, they both get the job done, but the question you have to ask yourself is do I really want to deal with the constant crashing of windows? XP or not, P.C.'s suck!

Amen.
Mac rocks.
BUT right now my mac is messed up. For some reason the Kernel is busted. Whenever I turn on the comp it says I need to restart, so I restart, but it just pops up the same message again. I took it to get fixed and they said they would call me in a couple days.
Has this happened to anyone else? Because I'll tell you what......IT SUCKS.
If I lose everything on that computer......all hell will break loose.
adam, couldn't you reinstall X from the CD? supposedly that leaves everything the way it is (files, emails, prefs, home directory) and plops a new virgin system install in.
(btw, the phrase "virgin system" bothers for some reason. it seems to imply that something not quite right is going to happen to it soon. systems should be monks, not virgins. anyway... back on topic)

Nope. The cd didn't work. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with Apple Care and they couldn't figure out how to fix it. They told me to bring it to a computer store or to send it in to them to have it fixed. It's at the store right now, being fixed.
