i restarted it-no change. scratch disks are set up the same on my external hard drive. it's bugging the crap out of me! my applecare ran out so i guess i have to dish out the 50bucks to have them help me... problem is i don't have the software anymore.
any other ideas...

If you can get that far, the program IS opening, no?
I mean, search for the preferences file on your computer. You may need to google 'deleting FCP preferences' or something like that. This will reset all your settings, and hopefully fix whatever ails it.

Just for future reference, this is not true.
Unless what he's talking about is that the same FCP software is installed somewhere else on the network and it detects the same serial # which means that you're running pirated software (or at least purchased software running on multiple systems which still is pirating it)
Please buy a copy of the software for each system you're using.
BUT - to fix the problem. Delete preferences and if that doesn't work reinstall.
You can also try to repair your permissions using the disk utility.
