What kind of video/film projects do you do? Theres no point to buy a expensive editing monster if you typically do small romantic comedies. But if you do intense, complicated action movies it may be more reasonable to buy expensive software.

If you are serious about getting into editing, you're definitely going to want more ram than 512, so think about trying to expand your ram.

AVID should run on 512 mb ram. Dunno which other configurations your PC has... I really don't know any other editing programs besides AVID, because I'm totally OK with AVID and won't ever try something else.

For 3d, well, I don't know. It's pretty hard you know, many people think that when they have the software, they can do magic. It's not all technical skill, it's creative as well. For me, I run 3d max, which is fine with me. You might want to try Alias Maya as well. 3d Max and MAYA are pretty much the best 3d applications available.

A good way I would start to go about learning animation would be to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator to create the graphics you need, and then animate them in After Effects, there may be an easier way, but that's just how I would do it.

If you don't want to spend the big bucks, and tackle the nearly vertical learning curve of Maya or Max (which I'm gearing up to do) I'd strongly recommend Carrara. Here's a project I did in it: link

Hey that's some aweosme work you got there titanium. i've been playing around with 3D a bit lately, but since i have no money i've been using Blender, which is a freeware program, and is actually quite good for free. check it out at www.blender.org . here a link to some of the stuff i did with it http://heliotropesp.deviantart.com/gallery/ (not that great, but hey, i'm learning, lol). there's a few photos i've taken in the gallery as well.

[edit] I just realized i hit the big 300!

Nice stuff there! I really like the photo of the hallway, with the offset composition, its got a really great feeling to it.

I sell a bunch of my graphics & photos on a stock photography site called iStock. Its fun.

Congrats on 300!!

Avid is a good program. But it is best when used for motion picture movies, I'm talking about the $20,000 professional program. For the stuff most of us do an Apple would be best as well as Final Cut Pro/HD. But PC would still get the job done though.

Avid should run on 512 MB RAM . Maybe it's not your RAM though maybe it's your hard drive space how much do you have left?

If you are just starting out in editing or animation I wouldn't go with anything big. I'm thirteen and I started out with iMovie but now i'm FCP HD. iMovie or Windows Movie Maker is great for beginners because it's all really easy and then you tend to start to know what your talking about and go bigger and eventually you'll save enough money as I did to buy FCP HD and it's all worth it.
