Alright here's the scoop....I edited a movie at a friends house using premiere, when i captured my video the file sizes were incredibly small (straight capture). Like a 45min clip didn't reach one gb. However on my computer a 40min clip equals around 8gb. I thought it might be a codec, but from what i've read the DV is already compressed and JUST transfered to the comp in a capture....can anyone shed some light on this for me, because i really need to be able to upload vids A LOT smaller than i am currently, thanks!

-did you capture the video using the firewire (aka iLink or ieee1394) port (as opposed to RCA or S-Video cables)?
-Are you sure you are looking at the video files and not just the project file?
-were you able to edit the video right away? Or did you have to render it?
-Are the project settings in Premiere for NTSC DV 720x480?

If you answered "no," that's your problem.

captured using Firewire, yes video files, editing abilities were the same, project settings are correct...Now, should the files be uploading the size of mine or my friends, cause my friends is so much more desirable....and his quality was just as good...why might this be

there's no way that you edited 45 mins of raw DV footage and it was under a GB, thats why I (and most of the people on this site i'm sure!) own a plethora of hard drives, both internal and external. Unfortunately, raw video is big, no matter how you slice it, and the renders chew up space too. My current project, roughly 30 mins, has an 80 GB drive dedicated to it. That's the way it is.

I have no idea what you did at your friends house, but i'd guess you were looking at something other than the raw file itself to judge size. How did you determine the size of the project? The DV capture may have been in a different location than your project file and thats why you didnt see it, thats the only thing i can think of.

It's about 4 MB/Second so that should be about 8 GB for 40 minutes.

Honestly, I suspect you're not looking at the right files. Or maybe the file is a shorter length and the rest of the 40 minute video is stored somewhere else. Something's not right. Either it's not the same quality or you're not accurately seeing the file size of your footage. Have you looked at his footage on a video monitor (i.e. television)?

On the other hand, if the quality really is just as good and the file size is that much smaller, you should go for it. Take advantage of this small miracle.
