Well, external drives rock, but thats beside the point.

Yes indeed, contrary to popular belief the Apple is no longer a hermetically sealed display of untouchable electronics. In fact, I installed a new 512mb ram stick in around 3 minutes on my G4, no tools required, just flip down the side of the case with a little knob that releases it. And I swapped the MLB battery in around 2 minutes too.

Long gone are the days of small, un-openable, un-upgradeable, beige macs. Smile

The beige ones were by and large user upgradable also... There wasn't a "door" but with a Torx screw you could easily open it up and swap RAM or PCI cards... at least with the towers. If you had an LC, well...

What do most film schools use, Macs or PCs? What about schools like NYU, UCLA?

Every film school that I've visited or been to has used Macs. I'm sure there are some who use PCs, though.

You shouldn't base your choice on what film schools use, since schools usually go with who has lower prices as well.

Apple is really good about giving schools big big discounts to get them to buy Mac products, mostly because they know once students start using it, they'll want a Mac of their own which they will get full price.

That's a good point. Apart from the lower price thing, it's a little lame to try to model yourself after NYU and UCLA. That goes along with the common misconception that schools like that guarantee success and if they're doing it, it must be the right thing. Do whatever you think is right, not what you think they think is right.

That's true, but my reason in asking such a question is because if someone is already looking to buy a new computer and also looking into film schools, it might make sense for them to see what they are using since they will be there for the next few years. That doesn't necessarily mean you model soley on what the school has, but it is something to consider because it could prove useful... My guess is that when the editing labs get full and every student is rushign to work on their projects, a computer of the saem system might come in handy.

I see. That is a good reason for asking. I apologize if I came across as rude - I'm really annoyed by people who are obsessed with "top schools" for the wrong reasons.

Anyone in the creative/graphic design/media industries should be proficient on a Mac.
