Ok dokie SO I am having these cutting and pasting problems in my project and moving clips to other places. First of all let me tell you what I want FCP to do when I move a clip and maybe you can help me achieve this goal.

K lets say I have 4 clips in my timeline...in order..I want to move the fourth clip beind the second clip...so i pick the fourth clip up, and move it over behind the second clip and I release the mouse and the fourth clip is inserted behind the second clip and the third clip moves for it to fit and after i do this move my project is still the same length but the clips are just in a differnt order!

K now this is what it does to ME
I take the fourth clip and I bring it over and release it after the second clip (with my pointer over the line in in the upper half of the clip) I release the fourth clip here, When I release...it overwrites my whole third clip and my project is now shorter!!

I have tried this dozens of times with the mouse over under the line in the clip...and I always get the same result...I turn snapping on...snapping off...same thing...WHAT IS IT?!?! How do i achieve what I want?!?!?

I'm in front of an Avid right now but I think you need to look for the icon to change when you move it. It should look like an arrow turning to the left? You want to put your cursor in the upper right of the clip after the second one.

Woah that was confusing. Sorry I'm not in front of a FCP system right now.

I think holding the option key duplicates it.

You are overlaying clip 4 right on to clip 2. If you use iMovie, it will just put the clip in the middle of the two other clips. Maybe you've used iMovie before because I had the same problem.

Just take the needle thats on the timeline, place it between the two clips, drag and drop clip 4 to the 'insert' box on the movie-viewing window(in the upper right hand corner) and it'll be in place.

When dragging clips within the timeline if you hold option it should insert it instead of overwritting it, but this may be because my keyboard layout (the one you customize in final cut) is different than the one you are using. There is a key you can hold at it will insert it, or you can make it the default to insert or overwrite. JoeMamma's way works as well though, and is probably much easier than trying to figure out which key you hold. Also, when you do the drag to the canvas be sure the tabs at the right of your timeline are in the correct place (a1 with A1 for example) depending on which video and audio tracks you want it to be placed on. Look in the user manual, I often find many answers to my questions there.

Ya i knew about Bald Man productions way of doing it...by placing the needle between the clips you want, then dragging your clip to the insert box...but this is mighty long and tedious and sometimes impossiblle when working with tons of clips...there has to be an easier way! I tried option clicking it and nothing happened...Im still trying to figure this problem out and it is really annoying because they should have a feature for quick placement!

Don't option click. Hold the option key as you drag the clip to where you want it. Also, the insert thing copy's the clip to the location (my bad) instead of moving it, so that doesn't really work for the situation you described. Sorry if my posts are scatterbrained and difficult to discern at times.

Good Luck.
