My computer won't read my camera! I think something might be wrong with the firewire input on my camera, but before I spend money to get it fixed, is there anything else I can check to make sure?
I can sometimes get it to work when I wiggle the cord around on the camera.

well, since you described the wiggling thing, there's probably 1 of 3 problems: 1. the cord is messed up. 2. like you said the camera firewire input is damaged, or 3. both.

it may also have something to do with the capture settings on your editing program..but since you can get it to work periodically by wiggling it, that's probably not the case. Try borrowing someone elses firewire cable and testing it on the camera, and if that doesn't work, then see what's wrong with the camcorder.

Ugh... that happened to me. The FireWire plug on my cord is damaged, and so is the port in the camera. Other FireWire cables don't work (because they were bent at the same time when somebody tripped over the wire) so I imported 12 hours of footage balancing the cam in a way that made the cord work, and trying not to bump the desk.

Yeah, I have to keep my camera in the goofiest positions and pray nothing shifts. It really sucks

Too bad Frown

I have a feeling its expensive getting a new port put in, too. Probably cheaper to buy a DV deck. Anyone ever use a DV deck? How much ARE they?

getting anything fixed on a camera is expensive...a dv deck might be the best way too go, unless of course you just have the patience with keeping it so it doesn't shift.

DV decks are damn expensive (in $500+ range), fix the camcorder and stick with it.
