Is it normal that I have no sound in after effects?

well, you gotta import the sound into after effects. Then, to see your composition with sound, you gotta do a preview with audio.

even if the video file has audio already with it?

What you need to do, like joren said, is go into the TIME CONTROLS pallette and make sure that the PREVIEW AUDIO button is checked. (or unchecked, in 6.5)
