Ahh man, i can't believe I forgot this and I am not making it work.
Which is it? Band pass or Low pass that makes it sound like the person is on the phone. i can't seem to get it working what should I adjust the settings too?
I am asking you this because I am editing right now and i need a cell phone effect because it was just recorded as a normal voice.
well its a little of each. A high pass filter allows all frequencies above a specified level through, while a low pass allows everything below a certain frequency through. A band pass filter combines both a high and low pass filter so you can specify a range, or band, that is allowed through. This is what you want. Do it this way:
low pass around 3000 hz high pass around 800 hz
soft knee compression afterwards. The reason this works is because cell phone tech (and land line tech) uses these same principles to make voice easier to transmit and understand. So you are really doing the same thing. FYI you can also accomplish the filtering with shelving EQ's reduced to zero at the above frequencies instead of a band pass filter (does the same thing).
You know i was thinking about that, what do you think would be good to include? Thats a pretty broad topic. I almost wrote to Chris about it when he first mentioned the new section lol, so i guess this vote of confidence settles it
Wow. I don't know what to include. Maybe you could do a series of articles. Start with capturing good audio. Then you could have one about sound sweetening, for making dialog sound good, and adding realistic ambience and stuff like that. And one about effects, like phone calls, and other common effects (which i can't currently think of )

yeah, I was thinking about doing something with sweetening camcorder recorded audio, since bad audio bugs the s*** out of me. I also agree that jeff would be a great candidate for such an article. It would be great to have examples, using embeded audio. It might even be worth doing multiple articles that focus on the various audio issues. I wrote some (very long, preachy) articles about sound for my little website--check them out. Doing something similar (albeit more focused) for SF would be cool.

Wow, didn't realize my opinion was that valued lol, thanks guys! Well then i will def. take it on, and try and do some audio examples, per jorens suggestion. I'll keep you guys posted on how its coming. I'm in the midst of multiple projects so gimme a few weeks, i'll whip it up
