I'm on a mission to find a good Special Effects editor at no cost. And none of those crappy "add this hue and turn it to grayscale" stuff... I'm talkin' about as good as After Effects. Like lightning and gunshots and stuff...

I'd look into Wax 2.0, which I believe is a compositor like After Effects, only it's shareware (and thus free). Don't know how good it is, but it's worth a shot if you're on a budget.

Apple Motion and Shake dont come preinstalled with Macs. You can get Motion 3 (?) with the FCS2 pack and Shake will set you back about $800AU I believe I saw it for. Macs would be amazing if those programs can preinstalled *drools*

You will not find a program as good as After Effects for no cost. There's a reason After Effects is an industry standard, and there's a reason it demands a high price. Anything you get free (if anything at all) will be nowhere near AE - for that kind of power, you'll have to pay.

My copy of After Effects has pretty much been laying around unused. Its a pity that such a good program is being put to absolutely no work I need to start a project

No such thing exists except for blender, but thats not really what you looking for...
If you want some good special effects stock footage (such as muzzle flashes, fires, ricochets, explosions, etc) for compositing, go to detonationfilms.com. They have some great stuff.
