I've heard (in comparison to FCP4 and Premiere) almost nothing about this program. Why is that?
Also, it's considered so darn good. But how come no one seems to use jit? It's about on the same price range of Premiere, and cheaper than Final Cut... (Canadian, that is) so, why is it little used by people here on studentfilms? Or spoken about so little, either or.
"We'll be able to get all the things we ever dreamed of... front, and rear spoilers for the cars!"
Its not that no one uses it... its that EVERYONE uses it. Maybe not here on student films but it is still the industry standard for non-linera editing.
I love it though it does have a few draw backs. While the interface remains very similar from the smaller applications on it up the price skyrockets. If you were say editing a Hi-Def piece it would be much cheaper to get a Final Cut system then and Avid that would handle it.
I edit with Avid though and enjoy it. Most seem to think the interface is difficult but its just different from Premiere or Final Cut. Once you learn it its a breeze. R. Michael

Avid IS the standard in the professional post production business.
Every feature, music video, and commercial that I've ever worked on was cut on an Avid.
Avid Xpress DV ($695) and Avid Xpress Pro ($1,699) are great peices of software. I have Xpress Pro and if you are familiar with Media Composer it is amazing as the differences between the two (beside the hardware) have become marginal.
I beleive there is an educational version of Xpress Pro. (If there isn't there should be)
Avid Xpress Pro is a great editing tool, mainly because of the sheer amount of realtime FX available on it and the 100% compatibility between it and the "real" Avid systems.

Yeah, AVID editing is very enticing, but once I installed the software and took a look... I knew nothing about how to go about editing the footage.. Mega bummer, so I decided to invest in the offical AVID books from amazon.com; I just purchased the AVID XPRESS DV 3.5 BOOK, so hopefully that will give me a good foundation to learn that beast more.. I think once I get the basics down, I will pick up the COLOR CORRECTION book from AVID as well. But yeah, I can't wait until the book gets here, because im psyched! -laters
