If you've ever used FCP, then Avid isn't too different. However, going from Premiere to Avid is beset with problems. The interface looks simillar in places but Avid is a far far different beast. So different in fact that i'm still struggling to learn it! Frankly, unless you really need the advanced facilities provided by Avid i'd leave well alone and first hone your editing skills with Premiere. Besides taking a course with me...one great way to learn Avid Xpress DV is to get the DV editing book available on the sites Film Book's section. Avid Xpress DV EditingThe book comes with media and has lessons and exercises. In fact...it is pretty close to the official Avid Xpress DV course that I teach in Hollywood. (except it doesn't come with me) It is selling for $34 on Amazon. The editing interface is pretty much exactly the same as Media Composer. There are a couple of advanced features missing, but the editing is exactly the same. In fact, the projects are compatible between Xpress and Media Composer. If you have any questions let me know. -Chris Studentfilms.com
