I have trouble with my FCP Compressor. I'm trying to compress a video so that I can burn it to a DVD, but whenever I submit it to the batch monitor, it gets up to 50% and jumps up to 47-48 hours to finish it. What's that about? Can anyone help?
ouch - i had a similar problem exporting from FCP with a high resoltion image at that point in the sequence. you could try doing the math to find out what point is messing it up.
also, look around at the apple discussion boards - they've covered nearly everything there
warning: reading apple's boards will make you paranoid. did you know some apple displays die after two years? some g4s turn off when a two way radio is used near them.... it goes on and on

does your g4 have a flat screen? it turned out to be some sort of radio interference with with that little pressure sensitive switch. made it turn right off... IF i remember correctly. also, if the screen ever beeps while the computer is off that's really really bad as far as i remember. the apple boards are addictive and terrifying at the same time

I would try disconnecting from the internet. With some computers, even the slightest internet activity (software update checking, etc) can mess up compressor.
also.... are you exporting from FCP to compressor or are you making a QT file and then opening up compressor. The later way tends to be more stable (although it takes longer. ...and you know that there is a funky bug in v4+ where things can screw up when exporting a QT movie. It's best to do a QT conversion and then make your settings the same as your timeline (ntsc DV) settings.
edit: oh, and what's your dvd authoring app? If you're using DVDSP 2 or greater, it will compress your movie for you. That may be another thing to try.

Joren, you never cease to amaze me with your endless knowledge. Thanks for the info.
I was trying to export using quicktime conversion, and I wasn't doing anything else on the computer at the time, I don't believe. I tried it a couple times and it ALWAYS stopped at 50%. I'll check the settings though to see if they're the same or not.
my pleasure. The great thing about these boards is everyone has different knowledge and experiences and has something to offer.
I'm a jack of all trades, master of none. A lot of this stuff I pick up on other boards. like for FCP, the best forum, bar none, is www.2-pop.com and another really good site for tutorials is kenstone.net. I try to read as much of the postings as possible, even if I'm not having those specific problems because I could at a later point. And the really boring stuff (like how auto-select works or the relationship between master clips and affiliate and independent clips) will really help you become a better (faster) editor. My skill lies in not falling asleep reading boring technical articles.
I've also been working with NLEs and after effects for almost ten years. Some of you were still watching power rangers back then (I was a 'tailspin' person, myself).
