You're not looking at Apple displays, are you? Get a third party 19" or 20"... they aren't that expensive.

I've got a good story about this, a couple years ago when I got a new system I got he whole works and a 20 inch etc and was really happy with it (and still) am, except about 4 months ago the monitor died on me for one reason or another, so i grabbed another monitor that was lying around, maybe 15 inches or so, and used it instead. i really didnt notice that much of a difference at all, whether for normal use or for editing. not to say there wasn't a difference, but it didn't affect the way i worked that much at all if any, which i thought wouldn't be possible to go back to after the 20 incher. in fact, i didn't send my 20 inch to get repaired for a hole month (it was still under warranty) because it really didn't bother me that much, the broken one just sat on my floor for that month. i thought at the time that the bigger screen would make my life so much easier, but really it just made me think there was a difference that wasn't there, i could have bought a cheap monitor for 50-100 bucks used, or in my case taken the old one i had lying around collecting dust, and saved the money on the new 20 inch an put it towards something else, just something to keep in mind

Hmmm.. i got one person telling my screen size doesnt matter too much and another telling me it does. I think im going to get the 17 inch one and then upgrading it to 2gig ram and 250 hd.(or more) then the final cut pro studio.

Once you've got a 17" screen it may indeed make more sense to upgrade other stuff first, but a big screen is an awesome thing. I've got a 20" screen and my laptop's 12" screen running FCP together, and it's delightful. Unnecessary, maybe, but delightful.
