Hello,
I am a new postproduction maker. I need to work with SMPTE time code. What kind of equipment do I need? And also I am writing music myself and need to synchronize it with the film using SMPTE time code. Is anyone can explain me what do I need to do and what kind of equipment I have to use. Bare in mind I do not have much money yet…

Thanx a lot

I am a little confused. SMTPE timecode is just the timecode that is on the tape. (each frame is assigned a number)

ProTools should allow you to mix with timecode. There is a free version of ProTools downloadable from www.digidesign.com.
Make sure the video source that you are mixing to has a "2-pop", a pop of tone two seconds before the start of picture and 2 seconds after the last frame of picture. This is so you can sync it up with the picture.

Please explain exactly what you are trying to do as well. I'm still a little confused about your question.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your quick response...Let me clear up some misunderstanding. If I decide to get someone else's music, what format should I ask the composer to send me, DAT? What equipment should I buy/rent so I can work with of-site musicians? I know that a lot of people using DAT, do I have to have DAT or I can use other formats utilizing Wave file? May there is some new technology, which replaces DAT??? I know I am not proficient to talk about this, but I need to learn!!!
Also I am using Q-Base for the music parts.
I hope this will clear up a little for you what I am looking for.

Regards,

Kinoshnik

DAT would be fine but they can just as easily send you an uncompressed AIFF file which would be just as good if you don't have a DAT deck.

The AIFF file should be fine. (wav should work too but I prefer AIFF)
