When i edited my movie and added my Voice overs into Priemere Pro, the sound seemed to be fine with no crackling, but when I put it onto DVD and played it on my computer, there was a lot of crackling, how do I fix this?

hmmm...interesting one. I think we need more details. Does it happen consistently or at points? Is it mostly in areas where the audio may be peaking? My guess, and this could be wrong, is you are right at or clipping on 0 db in the voice over track. Compress the voice over if you havent yet(this will help the overall sound anyway), then open the audio mixer and watch the levels. pull it down a bit and make some headroom, digital audio can be finicky. Leave 3db or so at least and adjust your mix below that accordingly. Make sure your master levels are clear too. Render a section out and see what happens.

By the way, when you rendered it to mpeg2, did you play that file back and see if it crackled or was it only on dvd playback?

Wow,
Jeff man, you are a lifesaver! I owe you big time man. I owe you tons! Anyways, I put it right onto DVD with Adobe Priemere and [layed it on my tv and there was crackling. Usually when I pronounced my S's, on the time line htough the lines do look like they exceed the box thingy. When i put it into an AVI file, there was no crackling htough, I am going to try your way right now!
Thanks so much!

another thing to check is whether you're having issues with cross sampling. If you're running PCM audio, make sure the sample rate is the same as your v/o and soundtrack source files and project settings (probably 48 khz). If you're encoding using a ac-3 (dolby or dts) compression, it automatically adjusts for the right sample rate so this won't be a problem.

Crossing sample rates can sometimes make a crackling or popping sound. Hopefully you're just over-modulating like jeff suggests because that's a lot simpler fix.

all the best

Good luck to ya goodwill, hope this solves it for ya. Let us know.

hey Joren, doesnt premiere automatically render audio when a sample rate is different than the project setting before export anyway? If so it may be wiser to change the sample rate outside premiere as that may be what is causing the problem. Watcha think?

yeah, it should, Jeff. It's best to manually change all your audio sources before sending them to the NLE (including any mp3s). I didn't realize he was burning the DVD right out of Premiere. I suppose it just goes off the project settings, right? I just wanted to make sure the DVD authorer wasn't set to 44.1 or 32 khz for audio encoding.

oh i totally agree, a low sample rate could definitely crackle it up, just a curiosity.

by the way joren, started building the dolly system today, designed it and bought all of the materials. We are using V rollers from an old rowing machine for the wheels, and your *patent pending* :-) intelocking pipe mechanism...i'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for posting that guide on your site, its been a gigantic help!

glad it worked out, Goodwill. You should submit the film to studentfilms.com. It looks interesting.

Jeff, I'm glad those pictures are getting some use. Post some picture when you have a chance.
