When you watch the DVD it shows the deleted scenes which look pretty normal for a XL-1. But then the actual movie has higher detail. What in post production did they do to the movie to change the look ?? I noticed this about other movies the raw footage looks grainy compared to the actual movie when its released.

Actually the movie recieved a heavy color correction (with a Davinci I believe) before being transfered to 35mm.

Using prime lenses and then doing an extensive color correction makes all the difference in the world. A film transfer dosent hurt eithere.

Magic Bullet is an After Effects plugin designed by some former employees of Lucas's Industrial Light and Magic. It is simply the most powerful consumer tool for making video sourced material look more like film. De interlacing and morphing techniques along with extensive color controls and almost limitless plugins (Some can be used to achieve differnt film looks such as the appearance in Minority Report and Saving Private Ryan normally achieved through specific film stocks and style of production)

Although from what Ive heard it can be a bit pricey but still cheaper than a full Davinci Color Correction and 35mm transfer.

Magic Bullet: $500 US w/ student discount

I've got it and it doesn't do any morphing. (But everything else you said was right, Tizzy)

the low quality could come from the compression...thhey might have compressed the deleted scenes material at a lower quality to save room for the more important stuff. Big Grin

If you watch the deleted scenes or outtakes reel on any DVD, it will almost always looks different, because that footage is usually unmastered. Look at Back to the Future, for example. On that DVD, the outtake reel looks like it was shot on 16mm. I can't explain it, but it seems to happen more often than not.
