They'd be a fairly uninformed buyer. These have been rumored to be released since mac expo paris ... a month ago. Besides, who cares. The DP 2.7 is a fine machine. It's not any worse now that there's newer ones. They're not advertising it, but it's actually still in production and being sold because it has PCI-X (which mac just abandoned for PCI express). so has anyone purchased the new G5 Quad??? looks pretty sweet... but who has the money to put 16GB of ram in one of these!?!?!? i don't think any PRO audo/video production apps will even reference nearly that much memory at this point. i know logic pro can only really use like 2.5GB joe greenier joe@jsgreenier.com film music

Hi Joe: It's funny you comment on this today. I just got the Fedex tracking number for my new quad. Originally it had a estimated ship date of Nov 25, so I'm pleasantly surprised. ...but the 6.5 Gigs of Ram I ordered won't come 'til a week later. Yes, you are correct that many apps can't reference that much RAM, not to mention the 2 Gig sticks are very, very expensive (and I'm not even talking about the $1400 2GB ecc chips). Final Cut Pro can use 4GB of RAM, but Motion (apple's visual compositor app) can use the full 16GB as far as I know. Some people have already taken delivery on their Quads and they are reporting fairly substantial performance improvements (compared to the 2.5 and 2.7 dual g5s) in after effects, photoshop, and other visual apps. But, real, thorough testing has yet to be done. Joren www.jorenclark.com"In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's mind there are few. " ~Shunryu Suzuki

Hmmm.... I'll have to consult with my accountant, of course, but it sounds reasonable. My only problem is the 750GB storage... that's only sixty hours of video. | PerryKroll.com | TRC | "If not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled." Wodehouse

when i heard about the quads i got really excited. i'm not doing so bad though with a dual 1.8 G5 and 2.5 gigs of ram. i just want another G5, a quad for just synths and sampling, and the orig for sequencing, then my pc for gigastudio and more sampling. but not at that price! heh. wow...6.5 gigs of ram. crazy. yeah logic only makes use of like 2.5 gigs.. which is okay at the moment, but sampling is moving away from hard disk streaming and into direct access from ram, so logic (as well as most audio production apps) needs to address this issue, as i'm sure they will soon. being from a pc background originally, i just think it's hilarious and kind of sad that PC's are still JUST making their way into the 64-bit CPU realm and breaking the ~2Gig ram addressing. i love my PC, but my G5 runs circles around it. joe greenier www.jsgreenier.com
