Rumors say that NYU accepted a 50/50 ratio for the '09 class in an attempt to even things out. I can say without a doubt that it's closer to 80/20. Rumors say a large portion of the girls, having been chosen based on gender rather than skill (due to the industry being so biased less women peruse film, therefor less are really good at it), transferred into other departments after finding themselves over their heads. I just don't buy this. Too many parts of it don't add up. But that's what the rumors said.

Well, you know, every once in a while one slips through the cracks. Nobody's perfect.
But seriously, I did a double take on that too. In the time that I've been here I've only seen a grand total of two females post on this forum. But I have respect for those two... they're pursuing a male-dominated industry and I say more power to 'em.
Dare I say that I now feel special?
I too am aware that film is a male dominated industry, yet was very surprised this summer when I went to a film program and 6 out of 13 of us were female. I was expecting to be one of the only girls...

That's a good point, actually. I don't think I've ever been to a film camp that was more than, say, 70/30 male/female. And the senior film class at my high school has 9 guys and 3 girls, so maybe the tide is turning? Or perhaps that's just at the small-scale, high school level.
Actors? What actors?

The tide is turning alright. It's kind of embarrassing how male-only the industry has been, so the sooner it gets around to evening out, the better. I read that in cinemas very earliest days, before it was respectable or made money, it was almost entirely female.

Well - actually there were quite a lot of women filmmakers when I went to film school at BU. There are alot of women filmmakers and film students - in fact alot of the people that I know from my film school out here in LA are women.
(Part of) the reason is that relatively few women use internet forums. This misrepresents the overall ratio. That said, I know at least a dozen male filmmakers, and no female.
I'm just not sure how you can generalize something like that.
... based on dozens of forums that I'm a member of. Hell, look at this forum. There certainly are not the same ratio of females to males as in the population at large.
What forums are these where males are drastically outnumbered? I'd be very interested to find out, and will refrain from commenting until I hear specifics.

Obviously this forum is a terrible example because it relates to a male-dominated industry. If you visit a forum the focused on fashion or some other female-dominated industry, you'd find that the males would probably be outnumbered.
Ah. Good idea. I just happen to have this photo of myself from a recent shoot, where I was wielding a Soviet Arri-S16 wrapped in a sound blanket and outfitted with a death-laser for killing freedom fighters.
