Radiohead just released thier new album "In Rainbows" online and they are letting fans set thier own price, even if it's $0!

As it relates to our own delusions of grandure about self distribution, what do you think of the idea? It worked well for Wilco not so good for Prince. And even if you hate Radiohead what would you pay for your favorite artists music/film?

I paid $5 for In Rainbows.

I think it's incredibly insightful and dumb at the same time. Radiohead (or the producers) recognized that a lot of people would just illegally download their CD regardless of the distribution strategy, but also knew that most people of a moral code. If presented honestly, the "pay what you will" concept should engage that moral code even in those who would normally download for free. However, this method also entices the group of people (and it is still a substantial group) who would normally buy the CD or pay full download price to pay less, due to the fact that paying at all for what one could get for free will bolster their moral ego.

It will be incredibly interesting to see how this works out.

It works fine for a group or party who already have a large fan base to work from. It's not like the artist make a lot of money from the sales of CDs anyway. But for a no name group to try and make money off this wouldn't work, I think.

Yeah, we should get to go to the cinema, see a film, and then decide afterwards how much the ticket should have been.
