yea, my g/f wanted to go see it. i don't see it much different than any other of those "masterpiece" theatre films, and those get on my nerves as well. it's like, they try so hard to be toned down and restrained and nuanced that it ends up looking melodramatic.
i'm trying to remember if there's any british film from the last few years that i liked, and i don't think there have been. even this british show about a criminal inestigator that's on television here, usually i turn off the sound and just watch it because it's so pretty.
Fair enough, personally my vote for best director would go to Michael Mann for Collateral, but he wasn't even nominated, but out of those 5 I would definitely not say that Mike Leigh is the one who least deserves to be there, guess we'll have to agree to disagree. And yeah... british film production is not particularly great, there've been some decent ones though, Enduring Love, Girl with a Peal Earring, In This World... What british TV show is that by the way?
