I think the rule is that films are ineligible if they've been shown on television. I'm not sure, though.

Fair enough, personally my vote for best director would go to Michael Mann for Collateral, but he wasn't even nominated, but out of those 5 I would definitely not say that Mike Leigh is the one who least deserves to be there, guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

And yeah... british film production is not particularly great, there've been some decent ones though, Enduring Love, Girl with a Peal Earring, In This World...
