Im sick of seeing the same movies in every category. Im rooting for some of the actors and actresses in closer cuz they were really good in that movie. Also I would have to support anything Eternal Sunshine wise, but Im pretty undecided in other places. Was THE AVIATOR really that good? It looked damn boring to me

I loved The Aviator. I thought it was a great film, and I think it'll probably win best picture.

The Aviator was overall a great film, I have some problems with the way it started and finished but the bulk of it was entertaining and a nice comeback from Scorcese (and Leonardo DiCaprio, come to think of it) after Gangs of New York. DiCaprio has a good shot at best actor, and coming from an ex-"Leo sucks" guy, that's saying a lot. If Johnny Depp gets it, it's going to basically be like when Jack Nicholson got an oscar for As Good As It Gets-- i.e., the academy felt sorry for never giving him an oscar before and are finally getting around to it. Chances are Jamie Foxx will get best actor, his performance was the most "popular", I suppose. Personally I don't think the Oscars mean jack sh*t artistically, but if I like a movie I'll root for it because like it or not an Oscar goes a long way in terms of seeing that director or actor again. I was pissed to see that Michael Mann didn't get a nod for directing Collateral, anyone who's seen the behind-the-scenes features on that film will know that he did a ****load of background work and prep for it, worthy of at least some recognition. And they didn't give Garden State anything, of course. Idiots.

clint eastwood over jim carrey? come on.

the aviator screenplay is nowhere near what Eternal Sunshine or The Incredibles screenplays were. and i can't remember last year's movies to remember better screenplays than the aviator.

no directing nomination for Jeunet but there is one for Vera Drake? They just gave it to him for it being about abortion and having to recognize that movie for at least something.

the aviator is going to win art direction eventhough A Very Long Engagement should.

and the editing nominees are ridiculous. Why do the nominees for editing always have to be the same movies that get nominated in the other major categories? it's like a throwaway award now. why don't they ever nominate anything interesting in editing?

and visual effects category is pretty crappy too. where the hell is A Very Long Engagement or Eternal Sunshine? Those didn't have visual effects?

The Oscars are so boring. And as much as I'd like Robert Richardson to get an Oscar, House of Flying Daggers was just shot better than the Aviator. But Richardson will probably get it anwyway.

I just cannot believe Paul Giamatti did not get nominated. I've seen the Academy snub some good performances before, but I was absolutely sure Giamatti would not only get an oscar nod, but win best actor.

Truly disappointed. And the fact that Giamatti could replace Depp so very easily(though he's my favorite actor), as well as Eastwood to some extent (although he was wonderful in Million Dollar Baby)...I'm just extremely agitated by the nominations this year. And while I don't think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind deserves to necessarily win in any given category, a whole lot more nominations would have been nice, especially on the technical side of it.

why oh whyyyyy isn't Closer being nominated for best screenplay?? The dialouge is more intense then most thrillers... it's just so raw and powerful.... who knows maybe its just me but Closer rocked my socks.. then again it occurs to me that the academy might feel trepedatious about giving a nod to a script that includes an online orgasam.... but that's art people

oh yea and the Garden State snub blows... don't even try to be a film snob about that one you know you enjoyed it..... Sooo I think what really matters at the end of the day is that Natalie Portman has proved that she can act, twice in fact.... and even if she couldn't she's still gorgeous so here's rootin' for portman

The Oscars are a joke and everyone knows it. That said, I was still surprised that neither Hotel Rwanda nor Maria Full of Grace were nominated for best picture.

The best director nominations are garbage too. Clint Eastwood is a fairly standard director who gets good actors and screenplays. Ray was supposedly poorly directed and badly paced, with only a good performance by Jamie Foxx to pull it out of mediocrity. Mike Leigh for Vera Drake is a good choice. Alexander Payne is a good choice. Scorsese for The Aviator? Ridiculous. Just because he's directed some excellent films in the past doesn't mean whatever garbage he churns out now should automatically receive a nomination. Where's Joshua Marston for Maria Full of Grace or Michael Mann for Collateral? Walter Salles for Motorcycle Diaries?

The editing nominations are BS as well. The Aviator? Was there anything distinguished about the editing? Same goes for Ray...

I find it funny how no one is ever in agreement with most of the nominations - probably because they are nearly always poor choices. BTW, why wasn't Wyclef Jean's "Million Voices" nominated for best original song?

I was at least glad to see Fahrenheit 9/11 receiving zero nominations, as it deserves. Regardless of your party affiliation that is a manipulative propaganda piece that completely undermines the basis of documentary filmmaking.

Umm. Conor, I love you and all, but you made an unforgivable mistake.

" If Johnny Depp gets it, it's going to basically be like when Jack Nicholson got an oscar for As Good As It Gets-- i.e., the academy felt sorry for never giving him an oscar before and are finally getting around to it.

Umm. Nicholson had already won 2 oscars! This being his third Oscar gives him the record for best actor awards!!!! Conor baby, check your facts first man. Also its not really like Johnny Depp has a history of being snubbed by the Academy...he just got nominated last year for the first time "Pirates of the Caribbean", and its not like he is an established actor quite like Jack.

RFranco, have you even seen Vera Drake? Or in fact anything of Mike Leighs? How can you so casually dismiss him?

I haven't seen A Very Long Engagement, so I can't comment on whether Jeunet deserves one or not, but Leigh is definitely deserving of his nomination, I think he may even deserve more than that to be honest - not that it would be likely to happen since Scorsese is 'owed' an Oscar, which he deserves - just not for The Aviator.

Anyways, how about predictions?

Here's mine:

Best Picture
Who will win: THE AVIATOR
Who should win:

Achievement in Directing
Who will win: Scorsese
Who should win: Mike Leigh

Best Actor in a Leading Role
Who will win: Jamie Foxx
Who should win: Jamie Foxx

Best Actress in a Leading Role
Who will win: Annette Bening
Who should win: Imelda Staunton

Best Original Screenplay
Who will win: ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
Who should win: ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND

is anyone else noticing that all the films nominated seem to be un original in the fact that anything claiming to be an original screenplay is based on a real person. seems like all hollywood can do now is make sequels, remake old tv shows/movies, and make a film about someone you alrady know about, hence the bio pic craze. It just kinda feels like theyre afraid to do anything that might be new or different, leaving everything ata stand still. I mean sure, there were some good original works like Garden State and Napoleon Dynamite, but theres not much happening. WHat happened to the time when films where made about real life (no, not the celebrity world)? Just something I've been noticing, and it's evidient in all these goddam awards shows. I swear there are more creative genes here at sf.com than in hollywood.

yea, my g/f wanted to go see it. i don't see it much different than any other of those "masterpiece" theatre films, and those get on my nerves as well. it's like, they try so hard to be toned down and restrained and nuanced that it ends up looking melodramatic.

i'm trying to remember if there's any british film from the last few years that i liked, and i don't think there have been. even this british show about a criminal inestigator that's on television here, usually i turn off the sound and just watch it because it's so pretty.

Ben: johnny depp was established way before pirates of the carribean, that's why everyone was talking about how he finally got one. eveyone though he should've gotten one for What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Don Juan Demarco

this one annoyed me too, mostly because it reminds me of the really annoying things Americans do that get on my nerves.

But on the other hand, I LOVED Raising Victor Vargas, and my g/f and her sister said that movie just reminded them of all the annoying/rowdy things latinos do (like harass girls on the street and trying to get laid all the time since we're more, uhm, "raunchy" about it?)
