I know we all had our feelings about this presidential election, but now that its over I hope we can bridge this gap in our country. Nothing is going to change no matter how much you complain Bush has been reelected, some of us are happy and some of us arnt. Now its time for us to stop complaining about how things are in this country because at least we have the right to chose and if you really want something to change here it takes more then an election. It cracks me up how people complain about how much they hate the legal system, yet these are the same people who fight and steal and find themselves surrounded in it so many times. What Im getting at is it seems like Polotics have a greater media importance then Humanity. Its up to us to make a change in this country, to write senators or take that extra step that most people arnt willing to do. We are a pretty lucky nation here we can make films about whatever we want for the most part and were not going to get put in jail or killed for our presentation. I dont know I guess Im the kind of glass is half full kind of guy and sure I want more and more things in our country, but then I have to step back every once and a while and look at how good we have it and stop being spolied. Not trying to offend any of you, you guys are like my family here and lately it seems like were not together. I love every last one of you and god I sound like a hippie but I wanted to get this out and hope that most of us feel the same as I do.

Very well put. I agree. Now that all this political stuff is over, we can begin to come together again. And I know we can, and will.

Good speech. It will be interesting to see if the nation can come together behind Bush, as long as we are in Iraq I seriously doubt it. I don't recall anyone rallying around Nixon durring the Vietnam war just because he was elected fairly. My guess is people will continue to judge Bush by what he does as President, and judging from yesterday that will keep the nation pretty much split down the middle.

On a personal note, it make me sick to my stomach that my state (Florida) help reelect Bush.

Call me crazy but I support the war in Iraq... not so much why we went over there, but what we are doing. We are liberating the people and helping them stand up when they had no chance before. My opinion is a bit bias tho... my best friend is in the reserves and is headed to Iraq. The thing is though he was born in Mexico and isnt even a citizen of the US. He stands strong for america and for helping other countries because he knows what its like elsewhere. I know Mexico and Iraq are two diffrent countries but my point is that we as americans dont realize how terrible other countries are living.

We obviously can't come together when 11 states banned the gay civil unions/marriages. And Florida has taken away the civil rights of underage girls.

And speeches like "you're with us or against us" isn't bringing anyone together, so getting behind rhetoric like that to make a better place seems a bit disingenous.

I was upset about the gay rights thing also... i dont agree that we should bann them from marriage. Unfotunatly its gonna take more then a vote to get that to be possible and the gay rights community is going to have to push and go that extra step. That kind of is a good example of my point. This country is so great because we have the power to change things, even after a vote it just takes hard work just like anything in this life worth getting.

despite all of the negatives at least california passed the stem cell research bill. Should put a damper on Bush's apparent desire to eliminate the concept of seperation of church and state.

I do agree that the country is divided (much like this forum was!). The election is over and we're all Americans. Personally, I'm glad it's over and the negative campaigns can finally stop.

As for the war, it's a very polarized issue. I can appreciate trying to help repressed people, stopping terror and what not, but we have plenty of problems right here in our backyard that I would like to see fixed before we get our soldiers killed overseas.

Just a little perspective - if this were the early 70s and we were in Iraq, most of SF.commers wouldn't be here, but sitting somewhere in Iraq or Afghanistan because of the draft. Would you fill the same about the war then? Maybe, maybe not. I see a tremendous amount of similarities between Iraq and Vietnam and I'm not sure there is a viable exit.

I'm actually not trying to downplay the war or make it unimportant. The war is there. We have to deal with it. So are other issues (like the gay marriage bans, strengthening our borders, domestic economic issues, etc.) and those need to be dealt with also. The best way to do it is to unite as Americans, not divide.

I'll step off my discombobulated soap box now! Wink

Come together behind this #$@%^, I don't think so. Name one positive change that this country has undergone in the last four years? We're more divided, our economy sucks, Social programs have undergone historic cuts, we have a never before seen loss in jobs, our environmental laws have been weakened, we're at war, everyone’s living in fear of terror, a daddy's boy with learning disabilities is in power and my balls itch. Complacency is what got us into this mess, I stand loyally opposed to our Commander and Thief. Get behind that.

The only positive thing that will come from all this is hopefully our counterculture will grow, political art will become more fierce and not to mention we get to test the theory of "Hey things couldn't get much worse."

Mark, brilliant post. The young people (on this message board and around the country) will tell you they are for the war even though the reasons for it are sketchy. But at the end of the day they are doing in on their PC in their upper middle class home. If the draft was still in place they would be writting about how they are apposed to this war. It is easy to say your for the war when it has no relivance to you. If you were one of those soldiers over their with terrorist's bullseyes on their back for reasons that are at best sketchy and at worst evil, you would be singing a different tune. Iraq will be better off in the long run but since we have been their over 1000 americans have died, 2 more countries have neuclear weapons, all of europe hates us, Iraq has more terrorists in it's borders than ever, and gas prices are at an all time high. and what do we have to show for the war? Only that the 15th or so worst dictator has been taken out of power. What a trade off.

Thanks Cammo. I'm sure there are some here that would go to Iraq with no hesitation, while others would say, "Hey, wait a minute. I don't want a gun in my hands!"

I have a friend who is kind of an uneducated, country-type fellow, but has quite a bit of common sense. He was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and he sees quite a few simiilarities in Iraq and Vietnam, and none of them are very positive!

I just hope that the administration finds a way to tie up the war and move on.

Im glad to see everyone having an opinion on what is going on. Speaking on behalf of the PRO KERRY people on this site I must say it feels like we trully got shafted again. As for the gay marriage comments as well as the war, I would like to add this. I might not agree with the type of life style that some people choose, nor am I convinced that people in the middle east are going to be better off by "liberating them," but I am happy to see that the voter turn out was better than last year. We have constitutional rights regardless if your pro choice or aginst gay marriages. The biggest one being the pursuit of happiness. We have the right to do what ever we want as long as it does not hurt anyone in the process. So my friends I say marry who ever you want to and choose what ever path that leads you closest to that happy place we all want to reach. Thank you!
