Most of you have probably seen this, it's a day or two old I think. It's pretty sweet. I'll totally consider a Macbook Pro now. It'd give me the best of both worlds, which is what I'd prefer. I don't need OSX, but I do need XP. With this, I could use both and they live in harmony.

It's an awesome move. I knew it was coming, but it still surprised me. Best of both worlds, precisely.

This is not a mac vs. pc thread... rather a mac marries pc thread. :-D

I don't have any idea about the new desktops.

The way they pitch it is almost as a 'comfort' issue for PC converts... that they can still runs Winblows if they feel like it or can't quite figure out how to use MSWord or some better application on a Mac Wink Of course, this shows that Apple is confident enough that the Windows test run won't preclude using their own OS.

Well, it makes my life easier. Now I can dual boot, which I've always wanted to do. My main problem is that with Mac based clients, they can't always play the rough cut video files that I render for them.

Sometimes I'll do a subtitling job and for simplicity's sake, I'll render the subs right to the video so that the client can ok it. However, Quicktime isn't always the right codec for this, and this occasionally causes problems. If I could dual boot OSX and XP, I could do my editing/subtitling in Vegas, render a rough version, and then test it in OSX (and troubleshoot) with out burning CDs or dealing with network transfers (for some reason, my iBook can't be seen by any of my PCs, and it sees some of the network folders on my PCs, but it can't always read/write to them. Any ideas? ::shrug:Smile I don't have to waste another step transferring it to my iBook to test it (which I just leave in my office, because I sometimes surf the web on it while my office computer is chomping away at video or something.) I'd be able to trouble shoot it in the same box, and this would make my life that much easier.

I wouldn't say it's a comfort issue to me, I'd say it's a convenience issue. I don't use OSX because I'm not as proficient in the video and audio software for it (industry standards or not.) The nice thing is that if I had to edit something in FCP, I could, without a real headache. I could boot over to OSX, do what I need to do in FCP, and boot back over to XP and work on something else, all in one box. What can I say. Life is easier for me on an XP system, but OSX will certainly come in handy sometimes. I'm thanking god right now that someone finally took the step to dual booting. It thrills me.

I have a mac book pro. And my reason for buying a mac was for the OS and ease of use. And stability. Without a doubt it is a superior operating system. Just not as popular as XP. I enjoy having seperate systems. I have my avid system (PC) and my Final Cut Studio system (my mac). I turn my Mac on FTP mode and I can toss files back and forth wherever I am. I would find it extremely annoying to reboot everytime I needed to use a piece of software. Personaly, I would rather keep the two OSs seperate. Right now im seeing it as having bragging rights on "Hey i got my mac to boot windows. I'm so tech savvy." So what? I'm not seeing a big advantage to it besides being able to say you did it. I already have all the aplications I had on my PC for my mac with exception of Avid, 3ds max, autodesk stuff, etc. All of which are already out there if not under development. They made OSX so easy to use you would have a serious problem if you couldnt use it. BUT, if you dont have 2 systems like I do I suppose I see the functionality in it.

I'm sorry, but carrying around both systems in one box is convenient if I'm on location somewhere. You never know what situations you'll run into. I've got four different systems right now, but I sold my laptop and my iBook doesn't help me in terms of video editing. I understand that for your needs, it probably wouldn't make much of a difference, but for someone like me who encounters both PCs and Mac users every day, it'll do wonders. I don't see it as me bragging that I can run XP on a Mac, especially because Steve Jobs just said it was ok.

Mac did something smart here, and I for one, am very excited. Some people believe that putting XP on a Mac is like committing murder. Well, if Sony would port Vegas over to Mac, and Cakewalk would port Sonar over to Mac, then I guess I'd own a Mac, since that software is what I use for video and audio. Since they don't, a Macbook running XP w/ Vegas and Sonar is the next best thing.

I'll give you that FTP is a good idea, and it'd save me the 2000 I'm going to spend on a Macbook. It doesn't make a difference though, when I'm out at a job editing something or making cuts. I could spend 1400 on a decent PC laptop, or I could spend 2000+ on the Macbook pro and get twice the functionality. I'm going with the latter.

Also, I don't think they make AutoCAD for Mac, which is something else I use somewhat frequently. Don't quote me on that though, I'm not 100% if they do or they don't.

Yea im not privvy to the autodesk stuff either. Another thing to note is right now the MBPro only comes with a 100 or 120gb hard drive. Two operating systems with 2 sets of software will easily chomp all the space. Once they come out with an intel based desktop...thats another story. Just now 2/3 of the space is taken up by just my apps. I run off of an external HD to avoid eating it all up. But maybe I will have a revelation if I take this thing on location. Wont know till I try Smile Hey, my background is the XP logo Razz That's as close as I will get for the time being.
