What would you rather be and what do you consider yourself?

Would you rather be REALL REALLY, amazingly good at one thing (Film, painting, etc.), like so good you are remembered forever like DaVinci and Shakespeare?

Or would you rather not excel in any one area, but be pretty good in a few different areas?

See, I don't excel awesomely at any one thing, at least not that I have found yet.

1. I'm athletic, but I'm not an awesome athlete.
2. I can draw, but its not as good as a lot of other people.
3. I'm pretty good at film, but compared to some of you guys, I pale in comparison.
4. I can write fiction fairly well, but I would probably never publish anything.

Theres some other things, I can preform, but I can't excel.

Anyways, what about you guys?

I'd rather be perfect at everything, but:

I'd rather be skilled in one area to the point where expression is completely intuitive than have 'decent' ability in many areas. Of course that doesn't mean I don't do many things - film, music, writing, etc.

One might point out that Davinci and Shakespeare both did many things. DaVinci was a writer, inventor, designer, painter, sculptor and a few other things, I believe...Shakespeare wrote poetry and acted, too. Just a thought.

good point Palm Tree, I hadn't taken that into account.

Still . . . nonetheless they truly acceled in one area, and everything else they attempted at. I guess its what Evan described . . .

hmmm . . . now I have to rethink my thinking on this matter.

ok rethought the definitions:
Pretty good is better then mediocre

Either Excel in one area, but mediocre at everything else . . . I.E. Shakepeare remembered only for his writing and the general mass of people remember/ recognize your name.

Or pretty good at everything but chances are you will be forgotten by the masses, but a small sect will always reference your work.

Yea I wouldn't compare yourself to Da Vinci, its fruitless. That guy excelled in so many different area's its inhuman. In fact there are theories that he wasn't human lol

Sometimes I wish I was the absolute best in one area and just excelled at that. But I think in the long run Ill be happier being a jack of all trades. Especially when I read about the lives of people that excelled in one area. Those people are usually emotional wrecks.

Or Just about every great comedian of all time. Except maybe Will Ferrell. You have to be either completely sane or completely insane if you're gonna name your kid Magnus.

Thats probably because he doesn't deserve to be in the list of great comedians of all time. He's a funny guy, but his humor and style isn't anything that hasn't been done before, and done better.

yeah, Will ferrel is really predictable. In any movie you can predict what he's goign to be like, and that makes it funny only the first couple of times.

I remember reading something where one of his costars said Will isn't funny in real life, just on screen.

I tend to dislike him, but he was actually really different, and really good in Stranger than Fiction. I think he took the role seriously for a change.

true, but it used to be funny seeing Jimmy Fallon crack up mid-sketch cause Ferrell was so hilarious, rather than later when he'd crack up just cause he's a f*cking idiot
