Anybody else hear about this? It's the new CD/DVD technology, and was recently invented by a Japanese company called Optware. It's called HVD, or holographic versatile disc, and can hold up to 1 terabyte (1,000 gigabytes). It uses a holographic layer to hold it all. It's not on the market yet but it's creating quite a stir so far.

Ah crap, and the HDDVD and Blue Ray's were supposed to be released this year. I'm only comfortable with new consumer formats every six years, damn it.

Seems to me that we may need some other tech to catch up first - i.e. think of how long it would take to burn a 1 TB disc. Come back in a day at current standards. It's a cool thought and probably in the right direction tech-wise, but i think blu-ray stands a better chance of being the follow up to DL discs. The integration into the PS3 will probably help push that along. Still...very appealling thought. Particularly for video nuts like us.

This may be stupid question, and I could prbably find out by clicking on the link, but how many bytes is a terabyte?

its really funny because i think they thought laser disks were gunna last like dvds and vhs has so far, cause all the schools in my province seem to have em, but they never get used, its pretty funny to think about, its quite the waste, then again, so is school

so true, my school as well. And at that point laser disc players were particularly expensive, easily 500 or more a unit. Such a waste. But then again, anyone who has seen demolition man is quickly reminded how state of the art laser discs were when they came out. The folks behind that seemed to think they would be around for the next 50 years. Sandra Bullock says something to the extent of "we have all of the files stored digitally on laser disc." Yep. Laser Disc. Big ol' clunky laser disc.
