Indeed. That smells of a fairy tale.

Finally, the laws that fine bad taste in music come into effect... Oh, you meant... Dammit... 'artists' like Beyonce take good advantage of that legal void...

That makes nooo sense. the music on the ipod was not published legally or something and when you update the firmware it sent a message or something to apple. I don't know if its true or not but thats what I've be informed about.

I know they could detect iTunes downloaded songs but what about songs from CDs, which constitutes the bulk of my library. If Apple and the RIAA have that sophisticated software to do what you said, they would be rolling in lawsuits right now because of how many fines they would hand out.
they find out if you registered your ipod with them EDIT: apple tv anyone looking into those? I have heard they started shippng.

This is impossible both technically and legally. Apple's privacy policy clearly states this information isn't transmitted to them, and there's absolutely no way they can tell whether a certain mp3 came from a legitimately ripped CD or BitTorrent. If I rip a CD for myself, then send it to someone via Kazaa, it's the exact same file bit for bit. There is no "illegal publishing" of mp3s...that doesn't even make any sense. You were informed very incorrectly my friend.
