Hey I was wondering if your middle or highschool had a video prodcutions class, and what they do in it. Currently my school has video productions classes, but since we are renewing our finearts wing, I wanted ideas that I could suggest to the school, and see what other schools do...

My high school has a production class that produces a half hour variety show that we broadcast on local access. It's a lot of fun.

Believe it or not, back in the day when I was in Junior High (not middle school!), we had a TV Production class. We video taped PBS educational programs for showing to other classes later in the day.

We also had a News/Weather/Sports segment during homeroom (I was the sports caster). It was back in the EARLY 70s and though it was probably state of the art then, we had VTRs (instead of vCrs) - no cassettes!

Sorry, I know that didn't help (30 years later), but it was fun to remember!

My high school had a filmmaking class. We were graded on three major projects, a music video (individual project), documentary (group project), and final narrative (individual). I took it the first year it came out so it wasn't that developed or helpful.

I didn't really have any video production class in High school. The only video production was part of a class called "Intro to Technology" or something like that. we had to go through stations of different things, like CAD and Flight simulator, and then there was video production. I did so well at video production that the teacher let me just stay there for the rest of the year. So I made this weird Jackass style skate video of my friends and I skating and making fools of ourselves (none of us were skaters, so it was quite funny.....and painful). Yes, this is a stupid thing to make a movie of...but hey, we were in high school. It was fun.

I had a Film Television class Freshmen and Sophmore year. The class had lots of potential, but the teacher was an arrogant **** with a huge ego. We mostly just did the 'morning announcements" (which look like pure crap) and we also did a couple small film projects.

I am in middle school and we currently have a video production class. It is really fun. Our teacher does different things. The first trimester we had to learn how to act and public speak in fornt of the class. We have announcements at our school that is done by our class and a kid signs up for it to do like Techincal Director or Audio etc. But yeah we do tons of stuff like make movies, music videos, and commercials. Maybe that will give you some ideas.

Kyle, your teacher sounds like mine.

A suggestion to you as your fine arts wing is adjusted. Make sure your teacher is a good one. All we do in his class is announcements and crap videos. I seriously do better stuff on my own. (Most everyone does in that class, now we're all secretly working together). The only reason I'm stil lin the class is so I can check out the Cannon XL-1 (Took a lot of brown nosing to be able to do that.)

My high school has two video courses: Basic Video Production and Advanced Video Production. In basic video we pretty much just learned the basics of the camera, editing, and scriptwriting. It was kind of boring ( I knew more than the teacher), but I did make this one really cool montage of a bunch of hockey clips. I will begin advanced video right after my midterms are done (about a week).

The inherent problem with taking production classes in high school or college is that to shoot anything, you end up doing all the work out of class, and straining against the restrictions they impost - why not just work on your own, making whatever you feel like?

I could take the "experimental film" production class at my college, where you shoot on 16mm and make experimental films. Nothing's wrong with that, but it's not my favorite type of production. Instead, I bought a GL2 and I work basically by myself with a very small crew, using local actors.
