I'm looking for someone to compose, perform and record a short piece for the end of my 16mm project set in the Philippines during Word War II. The rest of the film is without music, so this final piece is critical. I want something that is not completely Western or conventional sounding, since the film is in Japanese. Minimalism preferred.

The only hard and fast rule is that it must be recorded with analog instruments, preferably solo - no digital or samples allowed. What type of instrument?

Cello, shakuhachi, shamisen, violin, even a flute or horn? I'm open to any suggestion. Culturally specific instruments would be excellent also.

Hi Evan,

I've done some samurai-films, set in old Japan inwhich I used traditional Japanese instruments meshed with Western orchestra although this was all done with samples it's just a matter of how good the composer (with samples) is by creating a semi-realistic ambience and at times also a very realistic ambience. Also depents on how these are used.

Is there any pay to this job since you're strictly asking for live musicians and not to mention for these exotic instruments you mentioned, it's harder to come by of course instead of the samples. I don't really know if there are alot of people out there that play these Japanese instruments or collects them. I'm lucky that a friend of mine does collect and play them and they're very beautiful instruments. I've been studying traditional Japanese music for a little while now and incorporated the knowledge into the scores I mentioned, works very good but anyway...

...it sounds interesting. I wish you the best with this and future projects.

Cheers,
