Hey guys, I haven't been around too much at all but because my roots are here I figured I'd come back and give an update.
As some of you may or may not know, I've been hard at work on a documentary on Bobby Steele, former guitarist for the 1977 New Jersey punk band the Misfits and current songwriter/guitarist/singer for his own band of 20ish years, The Undead.
His story is an interesting, and some times hilarious one, from a childhood riddled with spinabiffida and a rare form of polio to a 3 year stint with the Misfits in the 70s to a misdiagnosis of AIDS in the 80s to a massive amount of legal preceedings in the new millenium with his land lord, the Misfits, and a guy who was trying to steal his identity. He's proof that you can do anything if you set your mind to it because he's still suffering from his childhood illness but he's managed to conquer the world.
In my case, I'm extremely lucky because it's all coming right from the man himself. The guy is an absolute riot, his stories are hilarious, he's got a memory like a steel trap and documentation to back up anything he doesn't remember, and his political views are more on the conservative side (which puts him at odds many times with many people on the now very liberal punk community.)
Basically, it's a very DIY kind of documentary with lots of inside information and interviews from people who were integral to the punk scene Bobby has helped create including Steve Zing (former bassist/drummer for Samhain, drummer for the Undead, current bassist for Danzig), Joel Gausten (writer/author/drummer), Doug Evil (ex-manager of the Misfits), and hopefully lots of other good people (maybe Glenn Danzig?)
We're basically just trying to inform people that punk isn't dead, it's just heavily wounded and in the form of Bobby Steele.
Aside from this, I've also been doing a lot with my own band including prepping for the release of an upcoming 45.
