Yeah the director that I worked with on Kribs is extremely talented. He also directed the Jason Mraz video that is playing now - the one with the bank robbery dance musical.
We farmed out the graphics in the beginning. They did a great job.
Those spots were a joy to cut.

Hey Chris - you seem to be involved in the music video industry, so I'm wondering if you know of a director named Lex Halaby. He does mostly independent stuff, but he's pretty big out in LA.
Do you know of him?

As for the music being cleared - no. They composed original music for the versions that aired. As far as I know they have aired - I'm not sure where though.
I kept the music that I used in the offline cuts as the music for my reel. They work better with the real music than the composed music.

Really Chris, you're defeating the whole purpose of your own site. Why don't you try submitting your reel instead, that way we can all watch your portfolio and not feel gipped that you didn't pay the hosting fee.
Damn, Im moving to LA and working as assistant, to the assistant, assistant editors cousin.
Nice work man. R. Michael

but the assistant editor bassically does all the work. The editor comes in a tweaks this and that, then calls it his (or her) own. Plus there is alot of grunt work associated with editing. Someone has to digitize and sort all that footage. The editor is editing, the assistant is often digitizing.
I know Chris edits, and works as assistant on some higher profile stuff. Its a great way to get your foot in the door and starting getting work as an editor. R. Michael

that the assistant editor captures the footage, seperates it to its specific bin, and sometimes will edit offline stuff, but the editor does most the work.
Either way, I hate editing...It bores me to tears! Very nice work Chris. BTW Liz Phair is soooo hot!

The assistant editor's job is basically to digitize all of the footage, seperate it into bins, and in the case of music videos, sync it all up and prepare it for the editor by "grouping" all of the performance takes.
It's a lot of work but that is usually finished in a day and then it is up to the editor to actually cut the thing.
Another thing an assistant editor will do, if the editor trusts him, is to do changes on the videos if the editor is too busy on another job.
That is actually a way that I got started and began to gain the trust of producers and directors. On some videos I changed enough that I could call them my own - Smashmouth and Liz Phair.
And yes...I do both - I assist and I edit. I am slowly making the transition to being a full time editor but that takes a while.

Hey Chris, how would I get a job as a writer/director of music videos? They all seem lame as crap and I think I could do better - honestly. Not the things you've done particular but just the MV industry in general... is there some reason for those 'easy' videos? Especially rap these days... come on! :P
