...and no, not a gay love story.

Okay, I am of the opinion that nearly every love movie is bad. There are a lot of great drama movies that have love in them, but those aren't actually love movies.

My film company is trying to develop a love story that guys would like. Is this impossible? Maybe. But we're going to try it anyway.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Right now we're just brainstorming, so we haven't really thought of a story yet, but we've generated some good ideas.
A little idea I had in mind was that the entire movie (until the end), the "lovers" aren't even in the same place at the same time. I don't know if this is possible, or if it's just ridiculous, so maybe someone could tell me what they think.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?

funny you should post this because that is kind of the idea that i'm currently drafting a script on. i've loosely used the cowboy bebop series as my basis. if you dont know, bebop is an anime about a few bounty hunters in the future. but there is a subplot therein that has love as the focus.
anyway, the idea i'm running with is the couple were soulmates in high school, but something happens causing the girls father to send the girl to live with her mother. the boy vows to find her someday. well thats why he becomes the bounty hunter/private eye and now, 10 years later, he finds her. but i'm working with some other elements to add some more depth to it.
hope my rambeling helps you some what, and good luck with the idea.

LOL, the first script i wrote (when i was 15) was actually a romantic comedy, from a guy's POV...

i think that there are too many love/romance/romantic comedies, that are more geared towards women, which in a sense, is alright because guys tend to dig the action/adventure/blow that mothafuc*a up kinda movie genere...

i think the closest they have come to making a movie that is 50/50 on both parties, would be Just Married...
what do you think? i saw it with my g/f when it came out, and i thought it was awesome in the sense that it wasnt just that girly romantic ****...

anyways, just make it from the guys pov...
thats the best advice i think i can give...
if you have guys in mind (whoa that sounds gay), throughout the whole process, you are sure to end up with a great movie...

they've been done before. Jason Biggs stars in a half dozen of them (american pie one and two, looser) and then there's one of my favorites starring the girl from felicity, eight days a week. One could even argue that all the 80s low budget, highschool, teen alienation films (think breakfast club) explore love stories from a guy's perspective.

I'd look at all those type of films as examples and steal what you can from them. All of them seem to heavily use comedy, which is tough to do well. Best luck.

There is a big difference between Teen movies and Love films.

American Pie and things of that nature are teen films, I would NOT consider American Pie a love film.... NOT AT ALL... i don't think i'm alone on that either.

Its hard to find a film that 100% love... most films today are either romantic comedy... which... is geared more towards women... then there is the shott 'em up and blow 'em up love stories, which is geared more towards guys... then there are the teen movies which isn't really love, its basically sex and jokes.

Love... there are few... Casablanca? Lolita? FOREST GUMP... there's a good one i just thought of.

Think about Forest gump... every guy i know loves that movie and its DEFINITLy a love story.

there are also movies like Rushmore and punch drunk love... all films i would consider love films that guys would like.

think in those terms... every one of those are original

i hate forest gump, so god damn corny. but have you seen High Fidelity? that was a great romance because it wasn't completely serious and had a sarcastic narrator a lot of guys could relate to.

Notting Hill was pretty good. And seriously, what guy hasn't entertained the belief that the most popular actress in the world would fall in love with him, if only she could find out what a great guy he is. I also like the Ed Norton movie about the Priest and the Rabbi that fall in love with the same girl. Can't remember the name right now.

That's more of a coming-of-age. Not a love story.

Joren: I loved 8 Days a Week! Caught it once during a "free HBO" weekend. Really funny film. If you havent already do check it out. (HIs sex obssesed friend is the best)

As to the question one could argue thats what I was doing with my entry to the script writing contest "Justifying The Means". Plenty of testosterone before its all said and done but love is his redemption.

Heck Adam Sandler has done it a few times. I really enjoyed "50 First Dates".

8 DAYS A WEEK WAS AWESOME. Im in the process of trying to get it on dvd but they dont have it on dvd in america but i found a copy on ebay im fighting over with some guy. I cant stand loving a movie and not having it in my dvd collection ( im a dvd collecting freak ) right now I have a crappy dvd player and the european dvd prob wont play on it, but it will on the imac! SO... dvd studio pro is all i need and then i will have a real copy and a "Mike Copy" on dvd that i can actually watch lol.

As for your love story trying to make it something a guy would like to i would try

Cant Hardly Wait
8 days a week
Cruel Intentions
Empire ( not a love story but a lot of it has to do with the main characters love for his wife )
THE WOOD- awesome movie cracks me up everytime

those are just a few of my favorite love type stories that I think guys would like. ( i have a lot of gurly dvds to tho lol )

can't remember if it's been said but all the teen/college movies (eurotrip, road trip, old school, etc) are focused around the presuit of a love intrest and always end on that happy in love note.

I just watched The Girl Next Door a few weeks ago and liked it a lot... it could have been made a lot better but the main story was so good that I still loved it. You should check it out when it comes out, you might be able to get some ideas off of it.

Moulan Rouge! I don't know if I spelled it right, but man that was an awesome love story! And it was a musical! The cinematography was excellent and the acting was extraordinary!
