I've recently been working on my 20's gangster flick and i think it is turning out pretty sweet. The basic jist of the movie is a gangwar between 2 familys. However i need a suggestion. What is something that the Italian gangs or mobs did for business. I need something that two familys can be doing like a drug trade network or somthing, Accept that one family tries to take over the whole business or whatever. Please help me find a good business that can come between two mob families.

Thanks

well if its in the 20s than it would be in the prohibition period. they would be running booze rackets.

if youre looking for a witty signature, youre looking in the wrong place.

So are you saying they sold booze illegally? Or did they just like control the whole booze distrubution network, kind of like a monopoly no one wanted to report?

dude- you seriously shouldnt be making a 20s gangster picture . honestly- you cant make a period piece about a period you clearly know nothing about. it kills me when teenagers think they can make films in a period where the extent of their knowledge stems from other movies.

there were also prostitution rackets. maybe you should watch some 20s style gangster movies before you start writing? i recommend once upon a time in america- a huge freakin epic that takes place in parts during that time. and pretty much any jimmy cagney movie from the 30s. and i am curious how youre going to do a period piece (you are JUST a student filmmaker, right?)

wtf guys? why nail me on this one. I knew that alcohol was made illegal by the US government sometime during the teens or 20's I saw a big special on it on the History channel. And who the hell are you to say im some stupid teenager that knows nothing about the productions I make? All i wanted was some sort of business that a mob could be running during the 20's. Once someone reminded me it was during the 20's that alcohol was made illegal, i knew it would be perfect for my 20's era flick. Geeze calm down guys, all i was looking for was an idea and reasurance to back it up.

Sorry, but u kinda sound ignorant saying this considering this is WHAT gangsters did back then.....Idon't think there was ever anything with cocaine.....that was later....watch "BLOW" for that type of criminal activity.

Its a noble endevour you just need to put a little research in.

There are literally tons of books on the roaring twenties and the crime that populated them. Hit your locaL library or bookstore and check it out. If you didnt want to do that you could simply rent movies. Road To Perdition, The Untouchables, not to mention just about any movie starring James Cagney. They will show you the mob infastructure and how the people of the times dealt with it. Do your homework and then make a killer film. Good luck.

Alcohol is perfect. One word of advice for everyone for anyone that does this kind of production:
Since your doing a gangster movie you're probably gonna have guns. WATCH YOUR BACK!!! MY buds and I were filming not 3 days ago. In the middle of nowhere, with a Cannon XL-1, script in hand and a cop come up and says someone called us in for playing with guns. Apparently we weren't far out enough and he told us to go out further. The cop was nice about it and laughed with us that someone would think we have a real MP-5 on hand. Any way, just make sure no one can see you, and if you have booze on production make sure the full of water and not real alcohol. I'm assuming you're a teenager, I don't think you denied that . . . and if a cop stops you for guns and takes a look at some booze among under age drinkers he's gonna have a fit. And if its a rooky cop who has an itchy trigger finger he might shoot first and ask questions later. Well, I'm done. Thanks for reading.

ok to clear some things up hear and to make sure you guys dont think im a complete moron. I knew that during the late teens and 20's that alcohol was made illegal. The way i said it made me seem like i had no idea what the hell went on then. All i was looking for was a conflict that could arise between two mob familys. I infact do know a little bit about the 20's and i am not some stupid teenager that does movies based on other movies. Argg i cant get to the point... You guys really nailed me for almost no reason at all. After i was reasured that mobsters DID sell alcohol for extremely high prices to citites i knew it would be a good conflict.

Don't worry too much about it Crazy Willy. The great thing about this site is you really don't have to listen to people if you don't want to and they can't tell.

I think the point crazy willy, is the fact that you didnt know that just by thinking of the mafia and the 20s, therefor infering that you are not the brightest light on the tree. Because that is probably the most apparent thing about the era.
Its okay though, you figured it out!

Hey man don't listen to anyone who bad mouths your ideas or films. For some reason people think that you can't just go out with no script and nothing planned and make a good film. You do the 20's mafia movie and you do it having as much fun as possible. Don't let anyone on this board who isn't a student and is to busy putting down other peoples ideas instead of being out making their own films.

Do what I do..laugh at them.
