Well all. I had heard rumors, but today it was made oficial.
"Intersection" won 1st place at the 2003 Palm Beach International Film Festival in their student competition.
What does 1st place get me? A trophy (all togthere now, Oooooooooo....) $1,000 (which is given to my school, instead of me. Jip. Of course, this means my film has earned 10 times what it cost to make, so thats cool.) and my wife, my producer, and I all get tickets to the $1,000 a plate opening night Gala dinner where we will get to rub elbows with celebs such as the now oscar winning actor Adrien Brody.
Finally a call to all you South Florida student dot com'ers out there. "Intersection" will make its theatrical debut at the Abacoa 20 theater in Jupiter, Florida on April 8th, at 7:00pm. The price, FREE. Yep, youll get to see 9 student shorts, and we are even supposed to play the H.D. trailer I shot a few weeks back as well. Not bad for a free show, huh? So, if you are in the F L A, you had better show, and if you show, you had better come up to me and give a "How do ya do?" Even if I look bussy, im not. I just look that way.
I will keep you all up to date with the insanity as it unfolds. (and anyone who has won a festival before, knows there is PLENTY of insanity. R. Michael

As soon as I can get a more perminant cut done, I will put it on this site for all of you to hate, trash, despise, spit on, and call for the removal of. In the mean time, Ill let ya know how it goes. R.M.

Yeah, just under $100 to be exact, and most of that was feeding my crew. Lights were cheap, cam and tapes were my schools. Dont have to spend money to make a good movie. R. M.
Congrats on the short, Tizzy. I sent my one and only short to four festivals . . . and I now have three souveniers of rejection (and waiting on the fourth)!
So to have yours entered AND win . . . that is really great. Congrats again.

Wow, thanks for the support all! Brian, e-mail me (and anyone else who wants to go) and i will get you exact directions, so your sure to make it. Last year the turnout to the student showcase was a little less then stellar, mainly because the festival did nothing to promote it. (and they printed two different dates that it would be in the paper) I want to make sure its a success this year, plus its cool to have people get to experience the theatrical debut with me, so come on out folks! Mark M. Dont feel bad. Festivals are all about politics, and sending your film wasnt a waste. Many wont accept a film from someone theyve never seen before. If nothing else, now they know your name. Also, search for festivals that specificaly have student competitions, and state the accept DV films. There are festivals for us Micro cinema folks, you just have to search em out. For example, try this: http://www.rewindvideo.com/Camp/ This is a fest run by the folks at www.rewindvideo.com Very cool guys, and a great fest. Cost nothing to enter, and they have everything from best actor/actress to best cinematogrophy, and music. The only catch... Your entry has to be postmarked by March 30th, this Saturday. So, if youv got a flick, hit the site, get the address and the entry form, and get it off NOW! What have you got to loose? The cost of postage? Good luck. R. Michael McWhorter
Color correction? Whats that? LOL Actualy, I need to do color correction on the final film (one of the things I need to do before postng it on this site.) to match up some scenes a little better, but those pics are un enhanced. That is straight off the tape. Its all about the lighing.
All in good time Rob, all in good time. Im trying to build anticipation. Actually, Im afraid I may have built it up to much, so now im waiting for it to die down. Oh Rob, it will be at Camp REwind if youll be there. R. Michael

Thanks my friend, but I don't feel too badly. Even without a film school education, I can see some of the problems my short had and I know some of the mistakes I made. I won't make them again (I hope!). I had sent it to only four NC festivals. And you are correct, my name is now out there.
One of the Festivals (Cucalorus in Wilmington) had 600+ entries and accepted around 40 or so. The director offered me a festival pass in my rejection email (being a filmmaker) and access to any area/event of the festival, so I went down there (4 hours away) and was treated like royalty - even without having a film accepted! There are some perks!
I'll do better on my next project. Thanks for the kind words - and info! I look forward to seeing your film.

Mark M. Cool to hear about that fest. When you find oone appreciative, and proffessional like that, stick with em. The Florida Film Festival is like that, but they dont have a competition for anything shot on Video. (Although they do have a night for selected video shorts) All they did was assure that you will enter their fest again. Plus, by you going down, they are sure to remember you.
Look out all you in N.C. I may be moving there before the end of the year. I smell collabaration. R. Michael
First, how many total films were entered to the film festival? What category did your movie fall into? How many films were competing in this category? How long is your film?
Just wondering. Thanks and congratulations, i will look forward to seeing it on the Net.

Ok, Just under 200 entries in the student competition, which is broken into 3 categories. Highschool, Junior College, and University. This year, Highschool had 120 entries. Junior college had 27, and University had somewhere between 10 and 20. There is also a proffessional competition for the first time this year, but I havent got those figures yet.
I was in Junior College, so my competition was 26 films.
and finally it has a running time of 28 minutes. The films I competed against were all shorts, but the running times varied from 3 minutes to 30. Most were shot on DV, or Beta but oneof the films I beat out was 16mm. The University films are all film, and usually the top films are 35mm. hats it from here. Any more questions, just let me know.
