"Good one, guys"

Tonight was a very peculiar night for me...first, its the last day of school for two weeks of me doing nothing (I hope the three of you get bitten by killer kangaroos - you know who you are) and work. Then, I got a peice of music sent to me that i've been wanting for a long time. Next, this is the aftermath of the first cut of RedFruit II being complete (final shot added yesterday approx 3pm - that's the first cut though) and at work there was a player awards and a mini film festival. Little did I know, I would happen to be the attention of this "film festival".

I noticed a few weeks ago about some people telling me that I should show RedFruit again (this would be the third outting)...so i figured they must really like it and said, what the hell. I was getting bored of it and had other things on my mind...but give the audience what the want, right? Kind of.

So I show up, we have the awards thing - nothing big. Just the managers saying thanks for all the hard work we did (for lousy pay) and that we were the 2nd highest grossing theatre in Toronto. Then, we move onto the festival - it takes a while to get started and I'm extremely tired and getting weary. I had been under the impression that this film festival would be for trailers to show for the real on in February. Well - it wasn't. First, once they figured out why the sound was messed up, the "Winning an Oscar" screen pops up and i say, "damn, they're showing it". So the RedFruit trailer goes through, some people clap. Then the film starts and people seem to get into it and then the credits and people clap. The teaser comes up and i hear someone say "cool" - teaser ends.

Now on the tape i gave them - Break-in was next but there was no way they could be showing this now. They didn't, they just fast-forwarded (i thought for a second why and realized the RedFruit II trailer is at the end of break-in) and they played the trailer...half way through. WHAT THE ****?! The trailer rules and is the best of all of them! Yet they begin to fast forward and I think - what the hell?! And say, "why are they fast forwarding - there's nothing else on the tape. I hope".

Man, was I really ****ing wrong. After the projectionist stops inconveniently into an opening clip, i take a closer look (lebo pulled my arm or something so distracted me for a second) and i hear a familiar sound. The scope-entertainment intro track! Then it goes weird. "What the hell? I didn't make this." And no, no I didn't. As the opening title fades away (poorly might I add), I see a similar shot that I had seen elsewhere...a second passes and I realise its like the first shot in RedFruit (cept ****ty quality and not graded - egh) and it pulls up on lebo doing something.

BAMF! It hits me like a ton of ice-cold bricks. The end is over people, I witnessed the first screening of a PARODY for my old film RedFruit, called GRAPEFRUIT! RedFruit seems to have had such an impact on my (so-called) friends that it was enough to actually parody it! The Great Mel Brooks once said in a commentary about whether he hates Star Wars to make ScapeBalls; "You only parody the things you love".

So I sat in my seat, watching these guys make fun of me, themselves, ruin Mark S. Affelds beautifully cued score and damage what is cinema. To make a parody of something like RedFruit means there is something very wrong in filmmaking - and I wouldn't have it any other way.

As I was sitting through this comedic commentary of my work (filled with many inside jokes - including one that was below the belt and uncalled for), I realized that I MUST make a RedFruit III. RedFruit II ends off completely open to ANYTHING - and if people went out of their way to make a parody of the first one AND the second one (I hear a rough cut of 9 minutes is done - yet the REAL RedFruit II is only clocked to 6:15 currently) - they will surely want to know what happens after the last blackout.

So as of this posting, RedFruit III has been announced by me. I will head the production of RedFruit III and will get it filmed once I get other work done. And in the spirit of RedFruit - it will not be scripted or storyboarded. There will be an idea - but so people can make more fun of it, it will be left open to many mistakes that can be made fun of.

Now, even though I found GrapeFruit extremely hilarious, i will comment on the technical attributes. The acting - sucks. It's very funny when compared to the acting in RF I - but its too poor to call it good. 2/5 in that category. The comedy is right on for most of it - but alas, for that below-the-belt joke that kept re-accuring you get an entire star off so it's a 4/5. The use of Mark S. Affelds score and my sound design - 3/5. The beautiful cues and melodic drops etc are ruined by the new images. It does not flow for most of it - but I must commend them as it's a rip from what I'm guessing is the quicktime file that can be found online. Hmm - what else. The editing - I can't really comment - you could tell many shots were done just in parody of my work so the editing never really flowed. But for the effort of trying to match it with the audio - 4/5. That's it really, and my overall feel for GrapeFruit would be a 4 out of a possible 5stars.

I will try and get GrapeFruit online and it will be included in something to be released by Scope in February.

Good luck, and may the schwartz be with you.
