Anyone else annoyed by the omission of music as a rateable criteria for films on this site?

Perhaps if there were ratings for sound and music, people would be more inclined to use original music rather than proffessional copyrighted pieces, as people who 'bit' cues from soundtracks would get marked down.

Or perhaps it could even be coded so that films without any original music could only get a maximum of 3 stars for that rating?

Regardless, I can't see any argument against having more options for feedback, and a more complete rating system...

Chris, show some love for the composers!

That's a good idea, yes. But there are flaws.

Some of the younger filmmakers on this board might not have enough money, or ability, to get original music. It would kind of be discriminating on them.

So, I think there should be a category for rating music, but you shouldn't penalize someone who doesn't have the means of getting their own original soundtrack. This is a student film site anyway. Many people use it just to get feedback. They know their music isn't original. They shouldn't have a restriction on their film's rating to prevent them from getting good feedback.

Good points Durden, but I don't know if I'd agree with you that being restricted to 3 stars (or whatever) constituted discrimination. It's no more discriminating than those with crap cameras getting poor cinematography ratings simply because of poor image quality. It was just a suggestion though, and I think you're probably right that it shouldn't be restricted, it's best left up to people how they choose to rate.

I dont think the film should be marked down just cause it uses copyrighted music, but it damn well should be marked down if the music has been used a million times before in other studentfilms.

but yeah, I dig the idea of sound/music being part of the review system.

Yeah, that's definatly a good idea. It kind of a annoys me when I'm watching a student film and I recognize the music. It makes me want to, well, laugh, even if the movies supposed to be serious.

Yeah, this rating system would be best left alone. Kyle makes a good point, films should be marked down if the music has been used too frequently. Smile

I forgot to mention this earlier.

Some movies are just good with copyrighted music. Like Garden State for example. It relies on a lot of bands to set the particular tone of the movie. And quite effectively I might add. Or what about Blow or Forrest Gump, both of which use music as a major element of the movie. So it's not always bad to use that stuff.

I think this addition to the rating system is an excellent idea. I personally believe the music in a film plays an incredible role and can even help move the story forward.

And that's where the rating comes in. I would mark down a Music rating if I thought the music was used in an ill manner. Just throwing in music left and right is easy, but placing it where it counts is the key to success.

As for copyrighted and original music I will not be marking down any films with either style unless of course, as I said before, I do not believe it serves the story in one way or another.

Just my two pennies there.

I don't buy that for a second. Anyone can make some sounds or find a composer who will put together a basic soundtrack. It doesn't cost anything. I never rate films with copyrighted music above 2 stars for the sound category. If you can't obtain something legal to use in your film, don't steal it from a major film.
