I'm about to start filming an adaptation of Tim O'Brien's somewhat fictionalized account of Vietnam, The Things They Carried. It's a short film that condenses the most important events of the 200 something paged book into, well, a short film. So my question is that, if I should keep the name but clearly state where the source material is, can I submit it to the site? I've seen films based on Edgar Alan Poe's short stories and other films with copyrighted music played throughout, so I don't see why there would be a problem but I figured I would ask first.
Thanks a lot.

Technically, you're not supposed to use any copywritten materials or adapt any copywritten work, but I don't think anyone here cares.

By the way, that's a great book. O'Brien is the best war writer since the days of Orwell and Hemingway.

Yeah I love O'Brien's work. Our movie takes his narrative for voice over and takes a few key chapters and makes a short film out of it. Our budget is already 2000 dollars plus but the weapons, wardrobe, and props look fantastic.

Sounds like it should be excellent. When do you expect to be finished? I'll be eager to see it. I should read that book again...

Holy god. That's impressive. If you already have wardrobe and props, what will that money be used for, if I may ask?

That film would be nuts to make. 2000 bucks if you already have props and wardrobe will make for some impressive filmmaking. It's the perfect war book to adapt into film, its concise, descriptive and very powerful.

I cast my vote for high shutter speeds!

Best of luck!

I'll be using my Xl1 and a group of varying sound devices. I'm so glad you all think it's a good idea...the book is just like a well of great ideas to pull from. I'll start a thread devoted solely to the film, post a few screenshots here and there.

Figured I'd add this as well for those of you who read the book...do you remember the chapter The Man I Killed? We're using that to start the film, then do a Fight Club time lapse to earlier in the book then work our way back up. You'll notice quickly certain characters have been cut, but you'll recognize a lot of O'Brien's trademarks in the V.O. and a lot of the side stories in the book we've worked in as chatter between the soldiers.

We're putting our guys through some grueling training, setting up listening posts, ambushes, weapons training (fake weapons of course), the like. The story comes first but it's meaningless if it looks fake.

I don't consider Heller a war writer. He happened to write a brilliant book about war.

Anyway, Catch-22 is my favorite book ever.
